I have $1000 to spend on upgrading my stereo including installation. Any ideas on how to best spend this cash??

Do you want expandability, or will you be finished after the $1000?

First decision to make:

Do you want max volume, sound quality, or low price?.... pick any 2

Seriously, though, if you want decent bass, and high overall sound quality, $1000 is pretty tough. Here's a rough look at some options.

System 1: bass on a budget
$0 Factory CD player
$200 Sub enclosure (Lucid)
$100 Subwoofer
$250 2 channel amp (subs)
---------
$550 + wiring/install
Consider adding rear speakers and upgrading the fronts for better sound quality. This will be limited by the stock CD player.

System 2: Skip the bass, I just want to hear it with the top down
$200 New CD player
$300 Front component speakers
$200 2 Channel amp (fronts)
$100 Rear speakers
--------
$800 plus wiring/install

Or.... give me both, I'm loaded
$300 CD/MP3 player
$200 Sub enclosure
$150 Subwoofer
$550 5 channel amp (everything)
$150 Rear speakers
$350 Front speakers (components)
---------
$1700 + wiring/install

I might push the price to $1500-but I would not spend more on future upgrades.

Do you know the specific components- I want to buy them on the net and then go to a local shop for intallation.

My main criteria is reasonable volume with the top down and minimal distortion.

I have a $20,000 system at home and I know I wont match that but seeing as I want to drive top down a lot it doesnt really matter. I just want the music to be clear-I am not a loudness or bass freak.

Even though it's slightly off topic,
can you post a pic of your $20K home system?
I'd love to see that, or just details.

I could easily blow $20K on an S2K, but I guess that
since I'm not really into home stereo THAT much,
I don't think I could spend $20K if I tried.

I'd just go to Best Buy, which is probably like APC
compared to Mugen (comparing Best Buy
to to the brands you must know about).

Thanks.

That pool table alone is freaking sweet! I swear that's the type of bachelor home i'm aiming for in a year or so. You married? If not can I move in? I keep after myself very well. Imagine 2 s2000's.
