Default '04 XM - can I use a smaller antenna

My hubby has a Roady2, even our tow pig (er, rig) has XM, so I'm considering it for my '04. I want to keep the stock head unit, so that leaves me with the expensive OEM option. But I have big issues with drilling into the trunk to install the OEM antenna.

Can a smaller antenna be used? Is it difficult to hook a smaller (magnetic) antenna into the OEM system?

thanks in advance!

Annie

You can put it in the secert compartment. I've seen many people stick it in there.

Thanks, guys - has anyone on the list actually installed a different antenna with the OEM XM receiver? I'd like to do something like the one ricosuave posted, but want to make sure it would work first...

THANKS!!!

I am using the little blitzsafe antenna in combination with the blitzsafe splitter on my OEM XM unit. It took a little filing and some electrical tape to get the adapter to work, but now that the wires are taped in place, it works just fine. I put it on the rear deck between the rear window and the trunk lid. I just ran the wire underneath the trunk weather striping.

I tried the blitzsafe antenna in the secret compartment, but it had too many drop outs. It must be one of those that must be on metal to work.

One of the local Chicago guys mounted his antennea under the headrail trim. It's basically right above the driver's side visor, but completely hidden. I don't think he went with the OEM one, but it is one other option for a VERY stealth install.

I am pretty sure he posted some pictures up. His screen name is S2000GT

I searched for some info on S2000GT's setup. I did not find any info on his antenna, but did find information he found on connecting a NON-oem unit to the '04 HU. Might save you some money:

Thanks everyone for your input. So if I have it right, you *can* use a smaller antenna but in some cases it's not as reliable (more dropouts, etc). I just don't want to drill into the trunk lid, so I either use a smaller magnetic antenna or I stick with CD's!

Thanks again...
