I was wondering if anyone had tried getting a set of 3-way components with the mid/tweeter in the door and the woofer behind the seats??

my amp is 200x2 rms brigged at 4 ohm....

For the space restrictions in the S, thats not a horrible idea...but wont do much for the sound.

You'd basically have to cross the largest driver (6.5") over as a sub and unless you dont want hardly any bass at all, putting them behind you isnt a good idea. Trying to get a midbass driver to play anything much below 50 hz. with any kind of volume wont work very well...they just dont have the cone area to move the necessary air to create any decent bass at any decent volume, and running them off the supplied crossover, with them still playing the mid freq. up to prolly 250hz or so, wont do anything much either because the seat will be blocking most of the output.

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I also was curious about putting two 8 in free air subs in that rear panel (I assume you mean behind the headrests and not in lucid-type panels) and reinforcing it with some mdf. Upon searching, the only complaints people seemed to make about putting speakers/subs into the rear shelf was that they would sound muffled when the convertible top was down. It seems to me that it would surely sound better to have subs under the top vs completely within the trunk (which people do all the time here). Now, midbass might be more adversely affected. Anyone tried this kind of thing? What did it sound like?

Someone has already thought of this, and the space behind the panels is limited.....you would have to cut into the cross brace some. Darkknight1999 has something similar, but they are just normal Alpine drivers. I imagine you COULD put a JL 6w0 in there, but I dont know the mounting specs for that. Squeezing in a standard 6.5" is tight, and a dedicated woofer would be harder, beause of the larger magnet.

I dont think an 8" would fit in Lucid style panels. As far as in the head rest, personally, I would not like to have the subs pointed directly at my head. People think that staging is a problem with S-pods with their 5.25" drivers. Imagine how it would screw up the stage if there was 200-300WRMS running to a sub that is 3" from your ears.

Modifry (i think its him) does have a sub box for the passenger foot well.....way up at the front (where only 6+' people can reach with their feet), and it looks good. Try searching on that. That way you can have a tightly sealed enclosure, have it out of the trunk, but not right next to your head.

If you decide to go with this, make sure the woofer is rated for "free air" usage.

I realize that space is limited behind lucid panels. I meant the panels behind the headrests where the convertible top folds. There is several inches of space beneath that plastic (into the spare tire on the pass side no doubt) that could be used for the depth of a speaker. These would be more difficult to enclose, so they would be "free-air" style...and I realize many people don't like that...but what about midbass woofers like this thread started asking about too (since I don't mean to hijack)?

You would have to completely build a new tray designed for it but anythings possible. You could put speakers under there(the tray). People have done it here a few times. Depending on how you build it and install it, it can sound ok or just completely muffled. You'd be better off building a sealed box under the tray and porting it directly into the cabin either through the tray or through the vents behind the seat's.

. Stock trat is way too flimsey to support any real sub action. Would definitely have to be re-inforced. That thing rattles as it is with a sub in the trunk. Imagine what would happen if you used that tray as the BOX.

That being said.....it CAN be done. Someone on here has put a Kicker Comp series in there.

I somewhere found pics of 13cm subs of Focal, and I had the idea crossing my mind, to mount 2 of them somewhere under the dash... so 1 on driver side and 1 on passenger side... maybe making a small subbox in fibreglass if necessary. Maybe pointing down so you don't see them but the waves should make a "roll" into the cabin....
What you think... or is this a shot in the wild?

I know that making the box and attaching it will be the most difficult thing to do...
The idea would be to combine these 2 little subs with a 2 way Focal compo set in the doors...
setup should sound nice, with decent bass... but not too much bass, not too much weight and keep your trunk for bagage
