You're right - but in all fairness, I've seen the external crossovers of many entry level comps which essentially do the same thing but just have a pretty case

i was thinking it wouldnt be that bad though because my hu has a built in crossover.
A crossover separates the lows into one channel and the highs into a separate channel (for example). So a 2-way crossover would have 2 outputs for every input. The HU has only front, rear and sub outs (normally).

Most of the head units I've seen don't have a crossover but do have a high and/or low pass filter. These have crossover points and slopes.

Kenwood's Sound Excellence feature offers enhancements designed to give you the best possible sound in your vehicle. Highway Sound optimizes your music so it can be better heard over the road noise, while the 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the tone to suit your vehicle. The Speaker Settings and Cabin Size functions provide settings that are tailored to your vehicle's size and speaker configuration.
The Digital E's crossover feature allows you to trim some of the lows out of your front and rear speakers, and adjust the low frequencies going to a sub, so your equipment plays more efficiently. If you're building a full system, the three sets of preamp outputs send a strong 4-volt signal to your amps for superior sound quality and lower noise levels.

i have the Kenwood KDC-BT945U. it does a good job clearing up the distortion from the stock set. I was thinking the hu plus the low pass on the type s should be ok.
