Question Is this an Aftermarket Alarm System?

Hello,

I recently picked up a 2001 AP1 and it only came with keys but no FOBs. I looked in the engine bay and there appears to be an aftermarket horn?

I've been trying to program new FOBs to the car but it doesn't work. Is it because there is an aftermarket alarm system?

Thanks,

That looks aftermarket, but as far as trying to program FOBS...

There are different FOBs for the door lock controller and for the factory alarm. The base FOBs which directly activate the door lock controller do not work with the factory alarm system and vice versa - because the alarm FOBs communicate with the alarm controller, which then tells the lock controller to lock/unlock the doors.

Depending on how that aftermarket thing is wired up, if whatever FOBs you have are not working I would guess that the FOBs you have are for the factory alarm system or that this aftermarket alarm is also sitting in front of the door lock/unlock controller logically.

Dealer installed alarms could be anything. Is there a label on the device in the photo? -- should be a good clue. I don't think there's such thing as a "factory alarm" other than the one in all the cars that honks the standard horn if a locked door is opened.

In the US the OEM alarm system was a dealer-installed accessory, so not all cars came with it. As pointed out
in an earlier post, when an alarm is installed, whether Honda or aftermarket, new key fobs are supplied which
communicate directly with the alarm controller, not the OEM keyless entry module. Assuming the original keyless
module is still in place, the proper fobs should work (though won't control the alarm), so make sure you got a
non-alarm fob, which has a trunk-release button rather than an "option" button, and FCC id E4EG8DJ

That's the same FCC ID as my 2006: E4EG8DJ. Just wondering if this is the same for all model years.

I purchased two different FOBs. They both have different FCC IDs:I went to my local locksmith and they told me to use the E4EG8DJ one but I can't seem to program it. I'm guessing since the aftermarket alarm is in place it's not letting me program a new FOB?

I'm following this tutorial for reference:

There is no label sadly. It does show an area where there should have been one though.

There is an OEM Honda alarm - many of us had it installed at the dealer. It has a separate control module that mounts below the driver's seat and per installation instructions a small red LED is supposed to be mounted just behind the parking brake lever on the center console.

The OEM alarm system comes in 2 packages (I have them ready to go except that I'm trying to figure out how to mount the control unit somewhere else because I want to install a Recaro Pole Position seat on these super low rails and there won't be room for it under the driver's seat).

How it connects to the door lock system is such that it activates the door locks when arming or disarming the alarm so if you have it installed you must use its included FOBs which are different from the basic lock/unlock FOBs which come with the car. They look basically the same on the outside but the trunk button is replaced with an 'OPTION' button.

As for how it differs from just honking the horn when a door is opened - the control module has a glass-break sensor (microphone I'm sure), and it also has an electrical input for an optional hood release sensor which can be installed in the engine bay.

While yes technically a dealer could install any old alarm - I don't imagine most would have gone for something aftermarket since Honda made their own, but I will say my old 2002 S2000 had it and that alarm speaker was not part of the kit.

My hunch with the OP's issue here is what I said earlier - probably this is some aftermarket alarm which is also connected to the door lock/unlock unit which is why the Honda FOBs he's using are not working.

*EDIT*

My base FOB has FCC ID E4EG8DJ
the alarm FOB has FCC ID A269ZUA101

The OEM alarm system uses the original keyless entry module to lock/unlock, so you can still use
the non-alarm fob to lock/unlock (but not control the alarm), but an aftermarket alarm may bypass
that module completely.
If you look in the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (photo 54) you'll find the keyless entry module
location under the driver's side dash. Make sure it's plugged in and no wires are cut. Also probably
worth checking its fuse (#26 in the under-dash fuse box).

This definitely does not look factory. I’m not even sure where to begin. If I had a reference for what goes where maybe that will help in trying to restore this wiring back to stock?
