Aftermarket stereo ideas
Hello guys
Was looking for an AUDIO/STEREO section at S2KI but can't find it feel free to remove or relocate my post if this is not the right place.
anyone have a recommendation for a stereo unit more updated to today's technologies? my main driver to change it is because my car has an old stereo with AUX and USB (when MP3 USB where popular lol)... but I would like to upgrade to something newer that have CARPLAY so I can connect my iPhone via WI-FI/BLUETOOTH.
thanks

Any modern digital media receiver will allow connecting phone via Bluetooth, even though won't have carplay or android auto.
Unless its got a big screen, those features (carplay) won't do anything. Hence single din radios don't have those features.
You could get crazy and do a dash cut and mount a tablet or one of the tablet based stereos. But to just get sound, any modern single din gets the job more than done.
A digital media receiver has a super short body (no cd player). You can actually fit a mini class d amp behind it, in dash, totally hidden.
These typically have 90w rms bridged. Class d, so no real heat, no fat cable from battery, etc. Easy install. More than enough SQ for a noisy convertible.
Then get decent quality component speakers.
Top it off with a Pioneer under dash powered sub. But mount it under passenger carpet footwell area. A larfe white styrofoam wedge, that you can slice a hole it for sub to fit perfectly.
Won't rock massive bass, but allows taking bass load off door speakers, which makes huge diff, whipe filling in low end.
You can get all this for around $700. You'll be able to hear it top down hwy no problem.
Add some sound deadening to doors will make a huge difference too.

I got an Alpine head unit, new Rockford Fosgate components and the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter from Crutchfield for about $210 shipped.
The sound is nicer but with the top down it's nothing great since the outside noise defeats most of the sound. I may add a sub later to fill in the missing frequencies.
The Alpine does have BT which is basically all I really wanted. Have the steering wheel controls is a nice feature also.

For small fee, Crutchfield will build a plug n play wire harness for receiver you buy and car its going in.
Also buy amp and steering wheel control from them same time, so included in wiring. In our cars they're dash pod aux controls, but as far as stereo industry is concerned, they're steering wheel controls.
Then buy Honda speaker harnesses, so plug and play there too.

Amps that'll fit behind dmr radio in dash:
Clarion
Alpine
Not bridgeable, so I don't recommend:
Sony
What I used, but no longer made. Still available from some places, but not Crutchfield
Pioneer

The Power Acoustik CP-71W has a modern full screen and is apple car play and android auto compatible. it fits behind the s2000 radio door has its own gps antenna and usb in and 3.5 in. it also have two video in ports for a rear and front camera. you can get the modifry.shop adapter harness for it and it will work with the stock s2000 near steering wheel controls. I used it all last year and its been great to have a modern head unit in the car.

I will try to install the stereo today, plugged all the stuff yesterday on the harness they provided and the new stereo. seems everything is plug and play except the axxess control unit have some striped cables to connect to the car radio controller.
if for any reason I have install questions... can I reach out to Crutchfield for guidance? ...
