Default For all the TV buffs

Im looking into buying a tv. Im interested in the Sony Wega rear projection 3lcd screen in both 50" and 55". Im not sure which I want yet. First, any comments, warnings, suggestions on this tv? Secondly, what kind of cables (brands and type) would I need to hook up sorround sound with dvd, playstation2, and digital cable. I need to have some kind of idea of what cables to get for my budget. Local Circuit City guy told me I would need to spend 600-800 on cables and surge protector... seeemed a little high to me! Let me know what you guys think and any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, Logan S.

Edit- no need to get crappy cables for a nice tv, but i also dont want to just purchase a name. Im looking for functionality.

PM PJK3 about this. I think he is pretty much a home theatre efficianado.

Personally, I think Sony makes good TV's but their name brings a bit of a premium on the $.

I prefer the picture quality of DLP tvs. I'm not a fan of LCD tvs. You get much better contrast clarity IMO. But everyone likes something different. You can get excellent cables on ebay for much cheaper than at your local circuit city. If you don't want brand name there are companies who produce similar without the price. If youre going to go Monster, then buy em on ebay.

Thanks for all the advice/opinions. On additional question, life span of DLP vs. LCD and ease of replacing/ fixing. I know DLP have bulbs that can easily be replaced... what about LCD? How expensive on LCD?

One thing that drives me crazy with LCD, is it ONE pixel goes bad. It drives me NUTS. I had a 24 in widescreen lcd monitor, and had ONE bad pixel. I'm not sure how often this happens with TV's but I'm sure it must. I know I've been using my DLP projector for a year and a half and have had no issues. I think they are supposed to last 2-3k hours. Depending on how much TV you watch, that might be an issue. But bulbs are very easy to replace. Not so sure about LCD. Again, they may last longer, but if ONE pixel goes bad. your whole viewing experience may become a big annoyance. I think LCD in general lasts a long time, but not sure how many hours.

Yeah stay away from Plasma. You do the wrong thing to those things and its over... 3-5K in the trash. You can not repair a Plasma TV screen. I'd stick to the LCD style, that or get a real projector and mount a screen on the wall. That's what I think I'm gonna do next. My partner has one and its awesome!

Again, I appreciate all the input! Due to the set up of my room, I am not concerned with wall mount. rear projection would be fine. I think I am now leaning towards the DLP due to the ease of repair. Now any idea on best DLP in 50-55"
