Default Alpine 9857/Modifry DCI

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but I installed my 9857 this weekend and ordered the wired Modifry DCI. It came today and I installed it with no problem and everything seems to work great. I haven't tried all the combinations/options but so far all seems good!

Yep, posted it in another thread

Do you have the latest DCI? With Tap-N-Press?

My bad then. Yes, I do have the latest. This little device does alot of things... I'm really glad I picked it up, now I need to understand some of the options. Does anyone use the variable volume option based on your speed? Sounds cool and I've had that with rental cars before...

I don't use that. I thought about it and have the panel removed cause I'm mounting my DCI there.. but I hated SCV in other cars but it does make a lot more sense in this car.

Could you please explain what the tap-n-press is? I am going to be purchasing a DCI this weekend for a 9857 and was wondering what I need exactly, should I purchase the s2000 harness they sell with it?

Thanks,
Nugget

Basically it gives you more functionality with the same buttons. If you tap the Mode button you get the next track... if you press the mode button you change your source (Radio, CD...). Tap is defined by a 1/2 second press.

Pretty cool stuff. I think I explained it correctly!

You can optionally turn it on/off with the dipswitches.

Thanks,

Tap-n-Press allows you to either tap, or press (hold for 2 seconds or whatever it is, but don't hit any other buttons) to perform different functions with the Mode and CH buttons. Hitting Mode with Tap-n-Press enabled skips to the next track, holding it switches sources as I recall. I can post the info later, I don't have the sheet with me.

I would purchase the harness also, otherwise you have to either cut the vehicle harness or add wires to a different harness adapter.

Since you are getting the 9857 you want the Alpine-Wired DCI (since the 9857 has a hard-wired steering wheel control plug).

Ok here's the commands for the Alpine Tap-N-Press stuff:
Mode: Tap = Next Track or Seek Up
Mode: Press = changes source (radio, cd, ipod, etc)
CH: Tap = Disk Up or Next Radio Preset
CH: Press = Changes Radio bands

All other commands are the same as previous DCIs.

I still haven't decided whether or not I want to add the SCV stuff. I might just because I have the panels removed right now anyways so I have easy access to the wire...

I put the 9857 and Modifry's DCI in last night. Installation was pretty simple for the most part. Getting the panels on/off the dash was a chore. Had to do it twice because I didn't test before closing things up... The center panel is a bear to get ON, not sure what the "trick" is but bending the lower tabs down a bit helped to get them seated... the rest was finessed, brtue force.

I had to work through a few problems with the Modifry DCI. All seemed to be attributed to the mini-plug cable. Strongly recommend you pop out the "+" pin (white wire) and solder to the crimp pin. Mine was loose and actually disconnect, possibly from my own handling of the cable. But it's really fragile. Here are the issues I encountered:
- After connecting the interrupt wire, the unit was always in interrupt.
- Had to turn on "Mute" button on dash controls to make DCI work.
In the end, I used a paperclip to get the crimp connection out of the wiring harness, soldered the white wire to the crimp connection and re-inserted into wiring harness.

The radio and DCI work like a charm! The Alpine HU provides a much a clearer sound than the droning stock HU. Display is great, reception of AM/FM is decent. Really brings some life to the stock speakers too, enough that I'm not rushing out to pick-up some components... just yet. The DCI in the end works as advertised. The SCV feature is great, would recommend to install the wire at the very least.
