Alpine R sub wiring
Hey guys,
I really don't know much about all this electrical stuff. I just know I need to match up my RMS (500) as close as possible when looking for an amp.
I have an old Alpine type R SWR 1042D and I'm looking for the cheapest amp possible as this is just going in my DD.
I'm looking at this amp: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...d_i=1000854891
I'm confused on the Ohms part. Apparently, I can wire my sub at 4 to 1 Ohms but is there any advantage from wiring one or the other? The amp is rated at Max power 2 ohm 1500W X 1
RMS power 4 ohm 600W X 1. So, that means is I have to wire my sub at 4 Ohms?
So confused.
Here's the specs on my sub:
Power Handling
Power Range: 200 - 500 Watts
RMS Power Handling: 500 Watts
Peak Power Handling: 1500 Watts
http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/swr-1042d/Specs
Here's the specs of the amp I want:
2 Ohm Stable Mono-Block
Variable low pass crossover: 40-150Hz
Fixed high pass crossover (200Hz)
Variable 0 to +18dB Bass Boost
Variable input gain control
Max power 2 ohm 1500W X 1
RMS power 4 ohm 600W X 1

Having zero experience with that brand amp... I can tell you this, there is no way in hell that amp puts out 1500w x1... lol Not for $64 bucks... I would bet its about half that in the real world.
In car audio, for the most part, you get exactly what you pay for. $64 bucks for an amp that claims 1500w x 1 throws up a red flag.
However having said that... I would wire your sub to run 2ohm and turn the gain down on the amp. It will work, it might sound like crap but it should work.

Thanks for info. I'm not looking for competition sound quality here. I just have a spare sub that i'd like to put to use. Do you guys have any experience with planet audio amps? They are pretty cheap with decent reviews. Maybe something like this?

If you need something on the cheaper side but good quality try Alphasonic. i sold a ton of these in the past and I've used them myself... great product for the money.

For that price, shouldn't I just get this?
http://www.amazon.com/MRP-M500-Alpin...lpine+mrp-m500
I believe this is what alpine intended for their consumers to pair the sub with, correct?

The audiophiles over at DIYMA recommended this amp for a sub at a great price point ($230 shipped):
AQ1200D.
That sub looks to be Dual Voice Coil (4ohm each). If you wire it in parallel, it will run at 2ohm.
How you wire the sub, series/parallel/single voice coil (SVC)/both voice coils (DVC), determines the ohms (aka resistance) your amp will run. A 2ohm configuration will give you more watts, provided it's stable and does not overheat, due to there being less resistance on the wire. The above mentioned amp will run 2ohm stable.
You can see here how watts are affected by the ohm setup:
510 watts X1 @ 4 ohm
870 watts X1 @ 2 ohm
1200 wattsX1 @ 1 ohm
This is all just an opinion but I would also add that I don't see a sub working on anything less than a $150 amp, if new.
