Ease of install and overall sound quality, dont need anything very loud but I am thinking of going w/o a sub so which gives the most bass? thanks any help would be greatly appreciated!!

 

I prefer the Alpine's over Inf Reference, but others will feel differently. You should go audition the speakers are you are looking at, bring a CD that you are familiar with (VERY familiar with the music) and test them both out, pick whichever one works best for the type of music you listen to, or whichever sounds the best to your ears. We all like different types of music and reproduction, some like cold speakers, some like warm sounding speakers.

What works for us may not work for you, you might hate them.. so go audition them.

 

I'm in the process of installing some alpine typer SPR-17S in my AP2.

I thought I could finish it all last night but damn it takes a long time.

YOu'll need a custom bracket as the stock bracket will not work unless you hack it. Even if you do hack it the amount of power the woofer outputs will probably rattle the bracket to pieces.

I'll also be adding an Alpine MRP-F250 bridged 2 channels to give these 100watts RMS as well.

Overall I love alpines. The fit an finish are just as good as the infinity's but I like matching brands when doing my installs thus my reason for going alpine. Sound quality is excellent as well. I had the 2006 model Compnent sets with 2 12" sub woofers all running at full power in my 2006 xterra and it sounded so clean.

 

okay, im going to test them both out today. Im probably going to go with the alpines just because everyone recommends them over those infinities. (except best buy since they dont know how to install them, so ill be doing it myself). lol so iv read the thread about tracing the basket and cutting out the wood and everything. i have a pretty good understanding, but still dont understand how the speaker will fit once the plastic pieces are put on?

After moving the cone out from the door so much, wouldn't it either hit, or not fit at all once trying to put the door panel back?

Also since I will be removing the basket completely (making spacer) should we replace the basket with something else? will it compromise the sound at all w/o any kind of basket whatsoever? thanks so much guys

But since you meant the basket part itself, you could use a baffle, but CUT THE BOTTOM HALF OUT! If you don't, you'll have horrible bass response from the speaker.

 

cut the bottom half out of the baffle? Is there any downside to just running the speaker with the spacer...no baffle just straight in the door?

 

There is no downside with running a speaker with just the spacer other than the speaker will be exposed to water whenever it rains or when you wash your car.

Baffles are good only as mini umbrellas, if you use them just cut the bottom half out so the top remains as a shield/umbrella.

As I'm in sunny california and I dont usually spray water on the top half of the car, I didn't use baffles. Just a spacer and some eDead.

If you use MDF for your spacer, be sure to seal it with some good paint otherwise it'll fall apart when exposed to the elements

I would just hack the stock basket, so that you have a plastic spacer. then you don't have to worry about the moisture. I have Just upgraded to Alpine Type X 6.5s and love them.

 

I wouldn't worry about moisture getting to the speakers, I've never run cut baffles in any car I've owned and have had aftermarket systems ranging from small (like the S2K system) to huge competition level systems.. never had a problem with the elements in that regard.

However, if you do make MDF spacers, paint them or coat them in underbody coating.
