Default Amp / Sub selection....

Hey Electronic Gurus-

I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for an amp / 10" sub. I made a custom flush-mount tool-well box outta MDF this past weekend. I am going to install an Alpine 9851 HU. I don't really want to amp the cabin speakers (the Alpine HU should do fine for my purposes). I am looking for an amp / sub combo that will fill out the sound (nice and full). I am not looking for anything like a Db Drag or mad bass system. Just something that will complement the new Alpine well.

Also, I am on kind of a limited budget. I will be buy most stuff from eBay or Crutchfield. (If you have any better sites, let me know).

thanks

John

I am currently looking at a Sony (pentagon style) and an Infinity 1032W. Which is better? I am really on a tight budget, I can pick either of these up on ebay for $75. Looking for $150-200 max on the amp.

I would try using the search button... this has been discussed many, many times.

Sorry Dark Knight.... I tried, but it turned up a TON of useless info. It woulda taken me hours to get through it all. I know you hate these threads.

I have already found the sub. I am probably going to get the Clarion SW10X. It says that the optimal RMS for this one is 300W. This seems a bit high for everyday use. Would it hurt the speaker if I ran less?

What is a good power output to look for in an amp for this speaker. I do not listen to rap or anything that really hits that hard. I am looking for a nice full bass note (classic and modern rock). I do not want anyone to recommend what is "best" because that is totally subjective. I mainly want to know what power level will provide a full sound, but not shake the hell outta the trunk. I figured someone could help me with that, knowing the sound dynamics of this car. I had 2 10" pushed at only 300W in a hatchback that was LOUD, but when I put them in a convertible, I could hardly hear them.

If you, or someone, could just suggest a power level to look for, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

John

^^ NEVER underpower any speaker. It's going to distort, harm the speaker, and make it sound all-around lousy.

I have experience with both RF and Infinity. I loved the old Fosgate HE2's, but those were replaced in their lineup. Try these:

or

It's all a personal thing, but I don't like Clarion subs. Make sure your amp is going to provide at LEAST the same RMS handling as the sub handles. You can always adjust the sub volume on your deck... you DON'T want to underpower.

Crutchfield is mucho dinero. Unless they have bargains going on. Ebay is your friend, Crutchfield is your Foe. Try Ikesound.com.

JL 10 w3, Infinity Kappa Perfect, etc

I am going with Kicker 12 inch L7, even though lots of enthusiasts dislike this sub, but many on this board are Pro solo baric.

You sure about that buddy?

I'm waiting for the expert junkies to step in to provide some words of wisdom, because I beg to differ.

It's more like when you over power it, it will distort, harm, and make it sound all lousy.

Perhaps you should let him explain himself...

I didn't say you should overpower them either, did I? Running too much power to a speaker isn't a great idea either. My point is that you shouldn't run something severely under the suggested RMS just to make the speaker quieter. I tried this same thing in my first car and it's horrible. Why get a 300 watt RMS speaker then starve it of power? Why not get a 200 watt RMS speaker and provide it with the suggested power handling?
