i have a pioneer with mp3 and xm capability, but i need to buy the xm device and the antenna at a cost of about 265 dollars i think. I want to wait to see how hardware prices fall in the coming months. My friend has it at his doctors office, and i can tell you that the sound and variety is second to none. I just wish they had some local stuff on there...like directv has. Maybe 1 or 2 stations from some major cities nationwide...that would be very nice. this is just the beginning though. i definately think xm is the future.

XMSR On the NASDAQ if anybody is interested. They are a publicly traded stock but don't forsee a profit within the next 4 years. Though if it takes off like I hope it will.........I might toss a couple bucks at it!

So for suggestions on placement!
1. Inside secret compartment
2. Under rear convertable top tray(inside trunk)(I like this one best if it works!)
3. Ontop of tray where it won't interfear with anything.
4. Under roll hoop. :/ Dunno to much work there!
5. Under bumper infront of car. :? Again to much work and have to run the wire all the way out there!
6. Suggested to me by an installer. Mounted to the top of a radiation proof hard hat and wear it! Yes he has been installing for way to many years!

You might also try searching for the toll tags used at the rolling toll booths. They would have the same problem and are more directional. I know the signal does pass through the fabric top, so basically any area that doesn't have metal (read shield) obstructing a majority of the FOV of the sky.

Glass should be transparent for the signal as well. I've mounted a DBS dish (similar frequency, similar issues) behind a window for a friend in a condo. It works fine.

I would mount it on the passenger side space next to the roll bar hoop. --You know where the little circle is. or cut a hole for the Terk antenna in the circle piece and place it in there.

working for tweeter, i can tell you we've done a couple of under-roof installations with no problems, and my car is next. my xm arrives this week from alpine, and i still have to pick a HU out, but hey - i got 8 hours a day to do that. when we installed the latest, in a BMW, it was under roof, inside my install bay with the overhead doors closed. exterior mounting may be just something they tell you - i'll post more when i have it finished.

How much are they going to get for the installation? And how much for the head unit?

it really depends on a few things - standard install for our car (no dash control units, just a straight install) should be about $60 - labor and wire harness. when best buy says it's free install, find out why the parts cost $50 - there's no such thing as free install. anyway, the XM set depends on car to car and where you want the tuner box (separate from the HU) mounted, where the antenna will go, and how far the connections need to be run. i've seen it from about $40 to about $100 - anyone who needs my help arranging this can certainly contact me here; i have access to every tweeter store and can arrange sales and installs with any of them (in other words, talk to me before you buy at any tweeter!). HU's run (i believe) with XM access from $249 and up to $999-ish.

How about this antenna mounted in the bottom of the convertible top well. Manufacturer states the size of the antenna is about the size of a computer mouse.

i have the antenna in hand.. it's about that size - i'm thinking of many many places to hide it. time for creativity interesting note: when you put it under glass or even some metal, it works fine. cup your hands over it, and the signal fades out. odd.
