A few years back (early 90's) Blaupunkt used to make the Dallas system. This system consisted of a tuner/tape deck (CD players were still high-end back then) and a stalk-mounted five band EQ. The stalk was made out of a sturdy metal tubing that, due to it's design, was fairly flexible. You were able to mount it between your seat and the center console so that it allowed you to tuck it out of sight when not in use. All the wiring ran through the tubing. I plan on trying something like this out but, being that I'm a couple thousand miles from my S I'm unable to. Has anyone tried something like this?

I decided to go with the Magellan Roadmate 500 instead of the Garmin 2600. The vent mount does suck as stated so I called customer service and they are sending me a free windshield mount. But having the GPS hanging from the windshield does not appeal to me. I think I will order the gooseneck mount form arkon.com. I will find a way of combining the Magellan mounts to the gooseneck mount.
