Default Best use of $500 on stock stereo?

It's not like I even have $500. I just wish I did. If it ever happens, I've been planning out a speaker upgrade with assistance from Lucid. (Thank you, Lucid!)

It was going to be Polk EX3560s up front and EX340s behind the seats. I even went out and listened to the EX3560s with an aftermarket HU and liked what I heard.

Anyway, too much time and not enough money is not a good thing. I'm now thinking my non-existent money would be better spent on a head unit. I'm waffling now because the stock deck RMS barely meets the EX3560 minimum recommendation, which I believe is 10 watts. Maybe I'm trusting specs too much and my own ears not enough.

If I go for a head unit instead, I won't hear anything dramatic right away with our sad stock speakers (or will I?), but won't that be a better starting point to build on?

People say you will...

I was in this same quandary a month ago but my amount was $400...For $500, you could do what I did minus the sub and its amp...

$160 - JVC KD-SX980 - mp3-playing deck
$100 - Nakamichi PA-502 - 50w x 2 amp
$240 - JL Audio XR650 CSi - 6.5" component speakers

On the dot

Not bad...and for $500, you'd have a rockin' front stage. PM me if you need links...

Or, for a little more, you can get my sub

Switch that amp out w/a 50w x 4ch and a CDT MS-100 sub...

Wow, looking back, I wish I'd done that...

Changing out the headunit can make a drastic change in sound quality - most decent aftermarket HU's will give you a sharper/clearer sound.

For under $500, I would get a new HU, a decent set of coaxials for the doors and move the stock door speakers to the rear. If you ever decide to upgrade from there, you'd just need an amp and front components.

Cancel that...I actually listened to the XR650's today at Good Guys and was *very* disappointed...

Go Cadence Neo or Rainbow Dream Line...

Maybe he means that later as an upgrade, you'd take out the coax's and stick the comp's in there...

Ultra-low budget, you could get the Crystal CSs60 (sp?) components from XXXXXXXXXXX for about $150. And then for the sub a Pioneer IMPP sub for $40 from XXXXXX...and finish it off with a couple 100x2 US Acoustics amps to power them from XXXXXXXX for $89 each...

There's your $400 system right there

(Not counting all the install stuff of course )
