Does anyone have any idea what the "real" purpose is for the empty, black "protectors" in the door panels? I suspect they were put there for an aftermarket crossover, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have a real clue?

Problem is, the speakers that I bought, the MB Quart Reference RCE-216, has a crossover that is way to big to fit into this "protector".

Would there be a problem if I removed the black protector and "install" the crossover in its place?

I think it's just additional support to prevent the door panel from being pushed in. My x-overs were small enough to fit inside, so I can't help ya there...

BTW, FWIW, the plastic housing actually has in it writing saying "Left" or "Right Protector".

I have the Boston 5.5's, and I removed that piece and placed my x over in that spot. I really don't think it has a real purpose, but I guess it was put there for a reason.

Is it a protector for the power window mechanics or the latch/lock mechanisms? With the window all the way down, is there something that would rest on it or come close to it.

My MB Quart Discus line x-overs fit perfectly right in there, like it was made for them.
