V=IR Your best friend for anything electronic.

12-(whatever voltage the LED is)=(whatever current the LED needs)(Resistance)

resistance calculator . . . google it. . . gives you the exact resistor you need and even the color code to go pick em up from radio shack (rip off for LED's btw. . . )
