Default bought a 10" sub but its not very loud

ok i hate posting questions in here b/c i feel like such a noob, but here goes...

about 1.5 years ago i purchased an alpine HU cda-9883, polk audio db6501's, and a used amp off a friend. this setup sounded great to my audio-noob ears. just about 3 weeks ago i felt i needed more bass, so i bought a 10" alpine type-r and that box that one dude sells on ebay that fits in the trunk oh-so-perfectly. hooked it all up and the sub works but its not loud at all. seeing as how everything except the amp is brand new i figure this must be my problem.

the amp is a Sony XM-404EQX. i found a website with stats on the amp here: http://www.fixya.com/support/p230117-sony_...audio_amplifier (i cant view many websites while at work so thats all i got, sorry). since i am an audio noob, i have no idea what any of those stats mean. i can hook everything up, i just have no idea if it will all work together

so basically, what i need to know is if my amp is not powerful enough for my sub. the other speakers still sound great, but i can barely hear the sub (if at all).

thanks in advance.

If those stats say 40w @ 4ohms? Then yes the amp is your problem.

Try to get the best amp you can afford, because that is arguably the most important part of a system.

You bought a decent sub so now you just have to get a decent amp.

Try getting something that will put out @ least 300w @ 4ohms.

Decent brands that wont break the bank too much. (rockford fosgate, alpine, pioneer, polk etc)

If you shop around ($150-$300) for a decent amp that will make your type r come alive!

Find a memphis class D mono if you can. I had one that was 1000w RMS and 2000 peak powering 2 12" in my old escort. Let me just say that with a 1 Farad cap I manage to rattle off my rear view mirror, window seals, and spoiler.

http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-GTO3501-GTO-3501-3...1742.m153.l1262

Bid on that one. I just one a 2 channel one from HK (that seller) and it was $60, normally $170 on Amazon. Its factory refurbed too. Don't be scared of that, I have bought 4 sets of home theater speakers, a center channel, and my cousin got a receiver all factory redone from them. The warranty them the same as new.

OHH so you are trying to do your mains and the sub off 1 amp? That's a different story... Hmmm, may wanna go with a 5 channel and just not use the 2 channels. If you wanted to run rear speakers later you could.

Which of the two versions of the 10" Type-R sub do you have? SWR-1022D (dual 2Ω) or SWR-1042D (dual 4Ω)?

Consider a couple of discontinued JBL 4 channel amps, the GTO75.4 or the somewhat more expensive and harder to find PX300.4 I saw a couple of the GTO75.4 on ebay.
