Building a sub box and critique my setup.
I am trying to put together a system for my AP2 S2000 and have some questions.
Just to give you an idea, this is the setup I had on my old car (Integra). The system sounded good to me and was more than enough. I would like to stick Alpine again for my S2000.
Old setup:
Alpine 7894
Alpine 6.5" Type R Component front speakers
Alpine MRD-M300
Alpine Type S 10" Subs (2)
Sealed box
This is what I am thinking of get for my S2000.
Alpine 9887
Alpine 10" Type R Subwoofer
Alpine MRP-M650
Does anyone have instructions on how to build a sealed box made of MFD for a 10" sub that fits in the tool compartment? I just want to keep it looking simple, nothing crazy. The bass probably won't hit as hard as my old setup and I am unsure about the sound quality. The stock Integra speakers were pretty crappy.
Can I get away without putting some front speakers? Are they 6.5" and would an Alpine Type R fit without any required modifications? I am hoping the stock front speakers will sound sufficient if I just put in a deck and a sub.
Thanks for your help.

mugenrsx: Yes, I did. However, an amp would bring the full potential out of them since the speakers can put out 100RMS each.
I am reconsidering this setup now.
Alpine 9885 Deck (Don't need imprint on 9887)
Alpine PDX-2.150 Amp
Alpine 6.5" Type R Component Speakers
I really just need clean/clear vocals and some decent bass. The PDX amp will utilize the 110 RMS for the Type R components.
If this isn't enough bass, I will either add a 10" Alpine Type S sub and bridge the amp to power it, and power the components from the deck. Or get a mono amp to power the sub.
I am leaning towards the PDX and components only as it will save me trunk space and $200 for WLAURENTS enclosure and this will give me lots of flexibility down the road.

With the same budget, the result of upgrading comp/amp vs. comp/sub from stock is always more noticeable. Any reasonable equipments & accessories will cost at least $400, not including labor.
Your 2nd setup with alpine comp replacing the sub is on the mark for improving vocals and midbass. Are you planning to spend some $ doing the install & door deadening? That'll make or break the overall result - they are like the brakes and suspension upgrades that go along with a horsepower upgrade
Neither setup will give you very good midbass/bass though but the 2nd setup will give you flexibility to upgrade to a decent amp/sub in the future.
Building the enclosure yourself may not save you very much unless you already have the equipments to do the job. For a fiberglass enclosure, it cost me $150 for raw materials, $300 for some tools (reusable) and about 7 full days to get it done the first time. A all wood/MDF enclosure will cost ~$50 in raw material (wood, carpeting, fill/absorber, etc.)

I went to a stereo shop and got to listen to the Alpine Type R 6.5" components powered by an amp. Not enough low bass for my liking... Clear sound and can definetely crank it up really loud. I definetely need a sub in the car to satisfy my ears, so I may go with this route instead. The PDX amp is overkill for me.
Alpine 9885
Alpine 10" Type-S Sub
V2 WLAURENT Sub enclosure
Alpine MRP-M450 Amp
How many RMS does the stock AP2 speakers put out? Can I get away without putting some front speakers in? I woud like to, but it isn't in my budget at this time and I could add later down the road.
Thanks.

If you are ok with the stock speaker playing off the HU now, you can get away without upgrading front speakers. Don't worry, your alpine amp won't blow it if you HU didn't already blow it because the alpine amp will produces less signal that'll damage speaker (clipped signal) at the same listening level as compared with the HU.
If you are planning to upgrade the fronts eventually, consider getting a more powerful 4 channel amp now or get a cheaper mono amp to drive your sub (then add an amp later).

I am currently running an amp for my OEM front speakers with JL Audio in the rear and it hit's HARD. the fronts are much better with the amp, but I installed components for another guy in an S with Aftermarket head unit and no amp and it sounded good too.
I purchased a sealed box for my 12w3v3 in the trunk that fit right in the tool well and it only cost me $40.
