mac is all in one box, just need power, OSX is almost screaming for touchscreen use, super simple to get it all up & running
what i've been thinking of:
mini-itx (epia m10000 or m12000 w/ integrated cf/pcmcia slots)
carpc case http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/sc.8/ca...it.A/id.373/.f

slotload slimline dvdrw/cdrw drive http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=5#p2119
frogpad bluetooth keyboard
was originally thinking of doing a very stealth lcd install in dash (think JDM lcd location but flips closed when not in use, thus hidden), but saw Ricks recent garmin install in the sunvisor area and started getting other ideas, primarily couse it'd be easier and cheaper if i screwed up, and i think it'd be cool to have the touchscreen there.
mount hardtape drive in either radio location or in centercompartment. hardtape is very rugged removable laptop drive that mounts like an 8track
easy way to take drives inside to update, add mp3's ect.
for OS i'm undecided on windows or linux, probably windows. want to be able to boot off of cf and run on ramdrive if possible, objective is to make it use the harddrive as little as possible. may not be as feasible as i'd like, but could work.
as far as control, got several options:
1: use only the touchscreen and keyboard if necessary
2: put IR sensor on PC and have it learn the inputs from a DCI and map to a few pc functions, thus dash works
3: alot more work, but set up voice control. there are several voice recognition apps avialable that macros can be assigned to, as well as win media player has some voice recognition capabilites with a plugin. I have both, but haven't used in a while. use a throatmic (http://www.clearercom.com/) for input, thus no problem with windnoise from top down or picking up inputs from what the pc outputs (a big problem i've had when playing with voice control for music playback)
added goodie, put a bluetooth phone control app on the pc (floats mobile agent), phone rings, have caller ID,etc, and use the throatmic & car speakers as a speakerphone.
slap an OBDII reader on and can have some realtime gauges if desired.
of course gps nav. right program and frontend and it will integrate perfectly.
