I installed the OEM CD changer today. I didn't want to put it in the trunk so I looked for a location inside the cabin.
I know it has been installed in the inside compartment bin between the two seats and underneath either seats.
I installed mine behind the passenger's seat. I attached it to the back wall using the holes and screws used for those silly looking (not to mention questionable usefulness) hooks. The bottom of the changer rests just about at the junction of the plastic panel and leatherette trim.
I bought two deck framing 90-degree bracket from Home Depot (galvanized type). The short side is connected to te unit. The long side is connected to the back wall. I aligned the short sides with the holes on either side of the changer and drilled holes in the bracket. I then measured the distance between the two hook screws and drilled holes in the long side of the brackets. I taped both brackets with black electrical tape to protect the panels and give the implementation a dark look (I have the black interior). To secure the changer even more I used two self-sticking velcro strips for top and bottom of changer. The velcro is not an absolute requirement but it does add to the robustness of the install.
I like this location because:
- It is quick and easy to do, both the install of the changer as well as the wiring forward to the OEM HU
- It provides easy access to the changer
- It does not require drilling additional holes or other mods to the car. I suppose removing the velcro would be a bit dirtier
- The passenger seat goes almost as far back as without it. I believe you loose one notch or two. The seat goes as far back as I have my driver seat back. I am 5'10".
- It's a job you can do in approx. one hour.
If you are looking for a different location for your CD changer, this is one. I suppose behind the driver seat is also an option but you would not want to limit your own seat. Also, even if you stop the car, changing cartridges would not be easy if it was behind your seat.
I dont think the OEM will fit in the secret compartment.......I could be wrong......go to Alpine's website, and check the dimensions of the CHA-S634 mp3 changer. (I have it) Its its an 1/8th of an inch bigger in ANY direction, it WILL NOT fit. The fit on the alpine is tight like hell, so there is no more spare room. Here are some pics for ya.....
Searching (sucks) trying to find the thread that had pics from the HELM addendum with the OEM changer mounted in the panel behind the seats...I have an idea
