Cheepo Speaker Upgrade--Advice Needed
I would like to keep the tweeters in my '03 but replace the main speakers, preferably with drop-in replacements. Considerations are:
1. Balance with the existing tweeters in terms of loudness and cross-over frequency. (What sort of cross-over is used in the stock radio?)
2. Ability to work with existing fairly wimpy amplifier
3. I mainly listen to classical music and jazz, so flat response and minimum distortion are highly desired
4. I don't want to spend much money
5. If there is no such system, I will consider replacing the tweeters as well, but want to keep them in their current location and, again, have a drop-in replacement

I have a pair of Infinity 605CS speakers installed in the front doors. They are a component set (tweeter + midrange/woofer) and a set of crossovers. Total cost of $78 from an Ebay auction. List is almost $200. They have a nice clear sound. Adequate bass (much better than stock). I did have to make an extra ring (used piece of foam board 1/4" thick) for a spacer, otherwise an easy installation. You can install the tweeters later. The crossover has two choices, one with an attenuated output, for balancing the tweeter output. You do not have to spend $$$ for much improved sound. The speakers are very efficient (92 spl) and can handle 90 watts RMS, and 270 peak.
That is just the sort of information I was looking for. Thanks.
Did you need the spacer because the speakers you put in are so deep they would hit the window inside the door?
Also, is replacing the tweeters difficult?

The speaker was just a hair too deep. The reason I used the foam board was that it was easy to cut (styrofoam sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard), acoustically dead, and cheap. If you have a scroll saw (one of those with a 16" arm and the tiny four inch blade), you can cut it even easier. The saw works well for cutting the plastic trim panel on mounting the rear speakers. The crossovers were just tucked inside the spacer at the end of the door panel. Since I had an '01, I didn't have an existing tweeter to replace. I took the Infinity tweeter mounts and hotglued a metal clip to them and clipped it on the door panel in front of the door lock plastic. It looks fine, can be repositioned easily and is highly reversible since I didn't cut a hole in the door panel.
The tweeters came with a surface mount, an angled mount and a recessed mount which swiveled. The swivel mount's outside threads fit inside a 1.75 inch diameter hole and the fastening nut has an outside diameter of 2 3/8 inches (required clearance to turn it). The flange of the mount is 2" and will cover a hole smaller than 2". If the stock tweeter's mount is within those parameters, you could just replace it directly. The tweeter itself has an outside diameter of 1 7/16", height of 9/16" and has an integral grillwork. Someone else mentioned using a 1 3/4" tweeter in the original mount. You might have to do some cutting. Hope this is helpful.

Actually, I think the speaker was deep for the basket. The clearance for the window was OK, but I didn't want to cut the plastic basket. It was much easier to make the ring. There's plenty of clearance under the door panel to raise the speaker off the existing position.
