Default Comments, suggestions, slaps upside the head for a setup like this:

Folks,

Jeez, one reason I chose an '02 over a '01 was because the stereo was *supposed* to be so much better than '00-01.

Put it doesn't get good radio reception (nothing compared to my OEM system in my '01 Acura CL-S), and distorts easily at higher volumes with any real bass in the music (current hip-hop at high volumes is badly distorted, must set BASS level to negative, etc).

Anyway, enough bxtchin. Wanted to just change out the front speakers, but seems like a consensus (correct me if I'm wrong) is the HU is crap -- can it.

Here's my proposal for a replacement given the following requirements:

-- I want to use my S2K's driver controls.
-- I want CLEAR midbass and highs at highway speeds and volumes.
-- Good bass is a plus. When I say "good bass", I mean as good as possible w/o a dedicated sub.
-- I will do the install myself. I did a complete install (all speakers, subs, cd changer, HU on a '95 Integra). But I don't want to do any "custom" work or any major modifications to the interior. (speakers, etc, should fit without me having to have to do any complicated machine work).

I have:
-- A Punch 100 2-channel amp. Easily pushes 125x2. Drove 2 JL Audio 12W4s without breaking a sweat.
-- Sony 10-disk changer, about 6 years old.

My thoughts:
-- Replace the Stock HU w/ a Sony XM-capable HU that can control my old Sony 10-disk (probably will have to go in the trunk).
-- Replace the front speakers with Hi-Quality Components that can handle the Punch 100 (Boston Acoustics, Kappa 6.1s, something else).
-- Get a Lucid DCI so I can tap in the s2k driver controls quickly and easily into my new Sony HU (w/o IR control).

Again, the goal is good sound at speed. Hope to limit the spending to the $500-700 range.

Does this plan sound feasible? Does it make sense? Any gotchas?

One final question after giving up on the search: Someone tell me a little about the "secret compartment" and what it is useful for.

All replies, input, slaps upside the head appreciated!

PS -- That Wlaurent box looks sweet. If I ever do decide to get some bass, that looks like a great, neat way to go for s2k bass.

Everything sounds good. All the components you mentioned will serve you right.

The sony HU will be ok as well, just get the DCI, and youll have the dash controls.

As far as the secret compartment, I used it to put in my CD changer. I hate getting out of the car, and going to the trunk to change CDs.

I am hoping that you are doing all of your own install work, there can be a lot of money saved there. Also buying the parts gray market can be a tremendous savings...

I just put a set of Boston 6 1/2's in an '04 on Saturday (I work at a stereoshop) and it was no problem at all. Just don't try to stuff something with an oversized basket in there and you won't have to cut anything.

Hey NFR, How much of the compartment did you have to cut to mount that changer in there? I didn't think there was enough depth. Looks sweet!

Do you think the factory one would fit there? I've always been "anti-alpine".

sounds like a decent plan...

as normal, go listen to your components options before buying.

Kappas 6.1's are probably not the best choice to run w/o a sub. they are known to be a bit bass light.

Boston Pro Comps sound good.
try the Focal PolyGlass and PolyKevlar components : 165V2 and 165K2 / 165KP2
check out the Eclipse components

i've also heard that the Diamond Audio's have decent bass response, but have not personally verified.

best of luck.

What do Boston Pro Comps run? Any recs on where to buy?

I'll have to investigate Eclipse. Never heard them. The Bostons I've heard were very great sounding -- very clear sounding!

Not ruling out the Infinitis yet. I had some in my Integra, and though they were coaxs and not components, they sounded just fine to me.

Thanks all for feedback. Dedicated, small sub may come around at some point. Right now, good components that can handle hi power w/ decent bass response are more a priority.

I'll probably stagger the installs. Meaning, I'll swap out the speakers one weekend, then hook up the amp, Changer and HU a couple of weeks later. BUT . . . will make sure that the stock HU can deal with the component's recommended min power reqs. Don't want the Stock HU to damage my new speakers.

Should be okay with that. Installing all the gear at once can prove more tedious a chore than I want to tackle at one time.

Hi: I installed my Alpine changer under the drivers seat attached to the seat bottom. With this araingement the seat movement is not restricted in any way, dirt is not likely to enter the changer and I can swap disks without getting out of the seat. I had some pictures of the instulation but can't access them at this time. You might do a search of the forum to find the postings related to this subject.
As to the secret compartment that is where I keep the XM antenna and the car regustration. others keep the owners manual there also.
