Component Speaker Sets (question)
I came across the following 2/3 way components:
JL Audio XR653 cs (3 way)
MB Quart QM218.61 (2 way)
MB Quart PSC316 (3 way)
I was wondering if anyone of you have experiences with any one of them.
I am in the hunt for a good component set for my S2K. I was looking at the Kappa Perfects before but have been discouraged by the reviews on them.
Anyways, the 3-way would be very ideal as I will put the 4 inch drivers on the back panel (ala lucid - thanks for the innovation man!!!).
I'll be driving them with my Sony ES 1-ohm drive amplifier (originally a 4way amp but I will bridge it to become a 2 way amp) which puts out 75 watts(rms)/channel bridged.
Any inputs, comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I'm sorry, I don't have S2000 experience with those speakers. I have heard them on a board at a local car shop and they do sound great. However, they are quite expensive.
I went with the Polk DX3065 in my car. They are powered by an old Kenwood 2 channel that puts out 75x2 rms. I am very happy with the results!!! If you decide to go with these speakers (or any other components with a seperate tweeter), you may experience an imbalance in volume between the woofer and the tweenter if they are further then 6" away from eachother (bc bascially they are on different sound planes). I resolved that problem by placing the tweeters on the front channel of the Alpine headunit and the woofer on rear RCA channel. Now I can fade between the two to get volume balanced.
I'm considering trying the 4" rear driver option. I also saw a 4x6 installed back there too. If I do go with either of them, I'll use the rear channel or my Alpine stereo.

A two way component system will require less installation headache. I would highly recommend installing at least one subwoofer in the system to maintain balance. Are you completing the install yourself?
Kibro,
Hey man... I have no experience with any of the speakers you've listed.... but I want someone to try out the CDT audio speakers... I'm really curious as to how good they are...
Check out:
http://www.cdtaudio.com/hd42_cdt4.htm
They have some three ways components and such.. Their crossover technology (if you believe the marketing) is better then all others out there hands down.... (I've actually requested the specs on the other guys crossovers via e-mail... most are 12db or less!)
Also try : www.ampman.com
They discount the speakers and are an authorized dealer (I think).

I suggest the alpine spx177a, their flagship, when I heard them next to diamond hex, MB's q series, and the perfects, they sounded a little cleaner to me. But with audio, its a matter of preference.
If you get a 3-way system you should not mount the midrange behind you with the tweeter and woofer in front of you... it will sound fair and out of phase at best.
A 3-way is designed to obviously split the full audio spectrum between three drivers instead of only two but also allow better imaging by having two smaller drivers (tweeter and midrange) handle vocals which are easier to mount higher (with the woofer obviously having to be mounted low do to its size).
Of course, do what you like... but I swear by 3-ways when the tweeter and midrange are both mounted in the dash... imaging is spectacular... especially with the top down.

Kibro,
News on the CDA-7878's we've been waiting for. Alpine finally updated their board. List $850 and a dealer quotes an August 8 release date.
As for speakers, I have Quart PSC 216's up front, with the tweeters stealth installed in the a/c vents. Imaging is very good, it doesn't impede the a/c flow, and best of all, NO CUTTING. (visible, anyway) Am using a Soundstream 4x150, w/ 2 MTX series 6000 10" subs flushed in the trunk "hole". According to the installer, no cutting was necessary for the door speakers.
Good luck! Let me know if you hear anything on the 78's.

i just install the mbQ qm component and they sound alright. it is very bright, but the bass is not good or not low enough, so i am thinking of either putting subs in the trunk... maybe u should try something else with deeper bass....

That is a good comment shaner. BTW, how's the finger?
You might have convinced me to stick to 2-way because I have no resources (read as guts) like you to install the speakers on the dash
I have one guy selling the MBs QM218.61 for less than $400... I might go pick up one set today.
Thanks all!
