I'm getting ready to order the 9857 and I want to do the speakers at the same time. I'm looking at the Infinity's right now, but I can't figure out if the 9857 will be enough to drive them... or do I need an amp at this time. I'm trying to stage my upgrade and will probably do a sub/amp in the future and would rather put the money into a good HU and speakers now.

I tried the faq and search but couldn't get enough info... so any advice/thoughts would be appreciated.

Do you have to add an amp now, no. Will the speakers be louder, clearer and sound better if you do, yes.

 

That pretty much sums it up. I will add this from past experience.

I installed Infinity Reference components in my old 3000GT last year to run them off the stock head unit and amplifier. That stock system puts out 25-30 watts. The components sounded so bad I pulled them and went back to my old Infinity reference 2-ways until I purchased an amp.

Re-installing the components and running them off a 75 watt, 2-channel amp made all the difference. They (the components) turned into my favorite speakers.

I'd suggest you plan on amping your new components. You really won't appreciate the new speakers unless you apply enough power to 'em.

i agree but if you are gettin a new HU the 50w to the speakers should be enough to get a nice clear sound until you get the amp...

 

Head units typically throw out 14-21 watts. That "50" is peak and meaningless.

 

so then whats the point of upgrading a HU if it wont be any more powerful than a stocker?

 

That's WAY more than a stocker.

 

so golfpro says that the stock HU throws out 20-30w in one post and then says that aftermarket HU's throw 14-21w...im confused here...Can someone give me a better explanation...

I've got infinity reference components and they sound GREAT off my 9833, but mind you the 9833 is 60 w max, and I think RMS is 23 W. Could it sound better with an amp, no doubt, but I do enjoy the clarity that I get with the setup I have now. And as long as youre not trying to pump the bass through you should be good. Get a sub for that.
