Default Diamond Audio S600s w/ 75 watts ok?

Hey all. I'm not happy with my Alpine Type-R fronts. They sounded good for the money at the local car audio shop, but just dont sound right in the S2k.

So, prime candidate for upgrade is the Diamond S600s, which can be found online for about $350 shipped. Anything else in that price range I should be auditioning? My only concern is that I'm driving them at 75 watts/channel. I get plenty of volume out of the Type-R's and the Diamons have a slightly better efficiency, so i'm guessing I'll be OK.

thoughts?

Well, they are listed as 150W nominal, and 300W max, so 75W sounds a bit low.

I personally run mine at 150W, and I haven't tried 75W. One of my crossovers blew up about a year after purchasing them. Luckily I purcahsed and installed them by and authorized retailer so they are still under warranty.

They are pretty nice though. When I auditioned them I prefered them over Focal Polyglass (can't remember if I tried R2s also) and whatever Boston Acoustics was offering in the same price range. However, I plan to audition Focal Utopias before I put these into the S. I do feel that the DAs are missing.... something. I can't quite put my finger on it. You'll probably also want to tune the crossovers down to -2db on the tweeters.

Edit: Put these into the Z. The Z?? Damnit I have to break that habit.

no way i'd run them on a measly 75 watts.

Get 200 watts min, and don't crank 'em all the way up. speakers love headroom, and this way you won't over work your amp. you will have problems with the speakers, amp, and the sound if you underpower them.

Oh well - not the answer I was hoping for. Hard to believe they woudn't sound substantially better than my current speakers, all other variable staying the same.

Maybe I'll just live w/ this system for a while - it's still miles better than stock!

Edit: Update - I'll be moving to a JL 300/2 for the fronts and 500/1 for the sub. the 300/2 should be plenty to run the Diamonds cleanly at my typical volume levels. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Which Diamond 6 series speakers are you looking at? I have D661s speakers in my S2k with 150/channel from a bridged JL Audio 300/4 Amp and love the sound of them.

You will get great results from the JL 300/2 from what I have heard to date.

Enjoy.

Yeah they are good speakers but are power hungry to see its potential!

You should be happy running these off a JL 300/2. Like I said, they can be a bit bright though, so I'd recommend making sure you get the silk tweets and turning the tweeters down on the crossover.

I'm also planning to audition some Focal Utopias next to these this week.
