Well I got the Dynamat Extreme door kit for my S. Even though it wont make a big difference, especially since our vehicle is a convertible, I still decided to get it based on a recommendation. VERY VERY Important, in order to take the goop off that holds the moisture shield off, you need Armor All or other oil based product, with out it you will be there all day removing the goop.
First off start by taking the door panels off.
Now you have to remove the plasic moisture shield, pretty much just pull it off, and cut the plastic around the door handle area so you can remove it.
At this point get the armor all out or oil based tire product, I used armor all wet shine tire protector to remove the goop, just spray the armor all on it, and use a clean towel and start removing it. It takes a while, so have patience.
After you have removed all the stuff, use some denatured alcohol and wipe down all the areas where the dynamat will go. Your door should look like the pic below.
If you can see in the above picture, the black dotted lines are where the plastic door panel cover ends, you dont want to put the dynamat past this point, as it will be visible, so make sure to mark the edge of the door panels.
Now just cut the dynamat to pieces and start applying. The dynamat extreme is really easy to use and is very flexible. For those of you worried about weight, it does not weigh that much. I figured I maybe added 3 lbs of weight to my car with this stuff. All that is required to put it on is just measure, peel the backing off, stick it on and then use a roller to make sure to get a good adhesion to the metal. I bought a $6 wall paper roller at Home depot to do the job, and it worked perfectly.
Its almost impossible to cover the whole door entirely, so I just put as much as I could in the major open areas. Pretty easy. Then just put the door panel right back on. Make sure not to cover up the six holes that hold the inner door panel on. The dynamat extreme door kit comes with 4 rolls, I used just two for both doors, so I have 2 rolls left just in case I want to dynamat my trunk when I get my sub in.
Impressions:
I had my doubts about how exactly this stuff would perform. Now you will not notice a day and night difference. The door panels are pretty solid on the S if you ask me. After playing through a couple songs, I did feel as if I could crank up the volume more with out hearing distortion that I could here before. I suspect the remaining noise I hear is from the actual plastic door panels rattling. Couple songs in particular would make something rattle before the dynamat, and now I dont here any rattling or vibration. Its not no miracle cure either, because if I really crank it up, I start to hear rattling and distortion, but as I stated earlier, I am about 99 percent sure its the plastic door panel and not the metal.
Cool...let us know how it goes. ALthough I wont deny you hear improvement....but...usually....dynamat doesnt stop rattles as it does stop invasive noise from the outside. So its not that you arent hearing rattles anymore, you are just hearing clean sound without invasion from the outside.
But, I have been wrong before, so I may be this times as well. I for one, do not have any rattles in my doors, and dont have an ounce of dynamat.
I think you are right, the rattling I heard before is still there, and after inspecting the inner plastic door panel, I have located the spot where it is rattling. It does seem as though some of the road noise has been reduced, but the dynamat wont help with the noise coming from the convertible top area. The sound is cleaner just as you state, dont have to crank it up as high to hear it inside, thats about the best way to describe it.
