What a difference. Finally got around to replacing the stock speakers with some Sony 1621's. Could only be easier if the screws removed themselves. Dont have quite as much bass at equal "loudness", but they are WAY more efficient. Louder at equal volume setting.. and distort WAY later than the oem's did.. and the mids and highs are tons better.

Installation difficulty: 1/5
Improvement: 4/5
Value: 5/5

Hi, I just picked up a MY2001 2 weeks ago. I can hear a thing with the top down and driving over 50mph. Did you keep your stock stereo and just changed the speakers? I would love to be able to do that and get improvement because I'm not really interested in changing the stock stereo.

Mind my asking how much I should be looking to pay for the Sony's you just got? Thanks...

At the risk of being rude, I would also be interested to know how much you paid and where you got them. I have looked on Crutchfield and it does not list any Sony speakers as being fits for our car. I am not a huge audiophile but have always had great luck with Sony electronics and would like to use them.

Finally, how much would you guess a stereo shop would charge to install? I am a freak when it comes to screwing around on my car and leave almost everything to "professionals" that at least warranty their work.

I bought the Sony XVS-1621's for $69 + 2-day shipping = $74. (You might splurge the extra few bucks and go for the more expensive 1621 version since they are so cheap.) Crutchfield even supplies the little crimp-on speaker connectors so that you don't have to cut any wiring or anything.

This is definitely a do-it-yourself job. You are going to spend 10 minutes trying to get the first door panel off, and then 10 minutes doing the rest. No cutting, no bending, no mangling. Unscrew one speaker, screw in the replacement. Very, very, easy, and a nice way to learn a little more about your car.

There are 2 Sony 1621 speakers: XSV-1621 ($79) and XSF-1621 ($69). The XSV version is a 3-way and the XSF is a 2-way. My speakers are the 2-way version.

The speakers did not require any cutting of the basket, just unscrew the old and screw in the new.

Barry,

Is the $160 (or $120) you've seen per speaker or per pair?
