Flat Screen TV
I would imagine you are talking about a flat panel TV and not just a flat screen. Any rear projector or many CRT style TVs are flat screen.
It really depends upon where you intend to use the TV and for what purpose. General TV watching, HD and DVD's only or mostly or combination. Video gaming? Well lit bright room, variable, or light controlled? It all figures in to what is the best choice. Also, your budget and size requirement is a factor in choosing.
Folks can get in to 1080P and 1080i discussion later.

1080I is interlaced which is every other line on the tv and 1080P is progressive, where its every line. obviously the progressive is way better, however, even if you go with an HD service from your local provider, you probably wont see too much difference yet, because nothing is filmed in 1080P HD yet. It would cost way too much to edit such high def video. I would say if you go for a flat panel, go with either a Sony Bravia (not Bravia XBR, if you want more info why other than the price jump, PM me), or Samsung LN. Oh yeah...LCD NOT Plasma!

my purpose of the the tv is to watch shows and some DVDs.. Not really playing games much..
I am just wanting to know what brand of TV i should get.. my price rang is anything under 2500...
One thing to consider, anywhere you go, they will price match other stores, not online. So that in mind, what size are you looking to get? Because that price range has basically anything around 46" in LCD.

There's a very large and well informed crowd at avsforum.com that should be able to answer any question you may have.
I FINALLY pulled the trigger and just bought a 52" Samsung LCD (5265F). It's very nice. There are pros and cons to each of the technologies and there's no "right answer".
Your best bet is to do a little research first then go to a BB or CC, etc. and look at a few. While those places are usually pretty bad at setting them up correctly, you can still get a good idea about what you like and don't like and what fits your price range.
You should be able to buy a pretty nice 42-46" LCD and still have some left for an upconverting DVD player if you have a decent number of DVD's that you want to utilize. When you get to 50" and up the prices go up disproportionately. It might be a little harder to find something really nice below $2500 at that size.
To answer your OP, there is no resolution difference between 1080i and 1080p, interlaced takes 2 passes to display the full 1080 lines. Smaller than 42" screens and/or from distances of more than 6-8' and few people would be able to tell 720p from 1080p. At this point however I wouldn't buy anything that wasn't 1080p capable.
Also - Be prepared for something better and cheaper to be out within 3 months of buying anything!
Unless you have devices that pump out 1080P, dont waste your money. The reality is, 1080i is PLENTY for a nice home tv. Cable, DVD, etc looks great on 1080i.
To put it in simple terms, and this is IMHO....
Imagine an s2000 with 900 horsepower...fast right? Thats 1080i. Now imagine one with 950. Thats 1080p. Its "faster" but do you notice?
As for what you want, whats your budget? I recommend panasonic commercial plasmas. However, they dont come with speakers.
