Default Funny things installers have told me...

I guess I figured getting decent system installed in my S wasn't gonna be exactly fun after the hasssle I went through getting me alarm installed. I've been getting some many "lines" from installers its starting to make my head spin. Of course the stuff the "other guy" wants to put in is always garbage according to the next guy you talk to. I just want a decent system installed professionally at a fair price. When i tell installers that I they are charging me double the price that this stuff is listed online they get this really pissed off look on their face. What do you guys think of this line I got last week regarding getting stuff online... This guy told me that everything you get online will have the serial numbers scratched off and that you can't trust it. Anybody gotten this line? The more I talk to these guys the more nervous I get about intrusting my car to them...

I love the "online is fake stuff, and your car will explode into a million pieces if you install it."

They're definitely stretching the truth. There are non-reputable online dealers that are going to sell you grey market junk, but they are few and far between. You will want to make sure the stuff you buy has a warranty (if warranty is important to you). Some manufacturers don't warranty online sales. BUT a lot of the online dealers that sell their products warranty them themselves. Also, be aware that a lot shops will charge a test fee on any equipment you're having installed that they didn't sell you.

Do the install yourself. You'll save yourself a ton of money by buying the product online and doing the install yourself. Most of the guys that hang around in this forum can tell you how to install just about anything you throw at them, so just ask for the help when your ready. Then you can go back and show the installer how hard it really wasn't and how glad you are that you didn't listen to them, and how much money you saved. Sweet revenge

BTW I have a full Alpine system all of which I bought online and all of it was brand new in the box. Serial #'s scratched off yeah right. And I got it all for about half or less then a retailer would sell them for.

OC1515, the shop that I had my system installed did not try to talk me into buying his gears at all. He may advice you in choosing what he think is best for the amount of money you going to spend to upgrade your audio system, but he will not talk you to buy them from him. The shop is USA Window Tinting and Stereo in Westmister, the address: 15191 Moran St Westminster CA 92683 (714) 898-4030. You want to talk to "John" at that shop about your stereo needed.

If you want too, you can listen to my stereo upgraded before you make your decision to what you like to do for your car.

there are some shady places online for sure... and you should be very wary of them and the gear you'll get. but there are legitimate shops out there as well...

when it comes down to it, if you buy local, hopefully that guy will take care of you on the spot. if you buy off the net, you might have to fight both the vendor and the company to get stuff taken care of...

how much is that worth to you?

also - they get pissed when you mention the pricing b/c the guys online are probably working out of their garages and have no overhead, whereas your local guy is paying for a lease, utilities, employees, demo equipment, etc. to expect the local guy to be as cheap as online just isn't fair or reasonable. but to expect him to come down a bit off MSRP to get closer to online pricing is fair, imo.

generally speaking -- the MSRP is typically just less than double the 'cost' a dealer will pay. (ie. a $500 CD player probably 'cost' him $275.)
