Default fuses blowing

I am going to take my car in hopefully this week to get my system checked out but I thought I would throw it out there for any input. My main fuse by the battery keeps blowing within 10 minutes of start up of the stereo. I was told it may be grounding out. I was also told that it could be my amp and I may need to buy a new one... Any suggestions from the stereo geeks out there

Thanks alot
J

Disconnect portions of the stereo and see if the fuse continues to blow. Try unplugging the speakers first, then the amp, etc. down the line.

You mean the 100 amp battery fuse keeps blowing, or the inline fuse blows (the fuse in that clear cylinder that you get with a system, that runs from the battery to the amp)?

Check this first, put in a fuse, and put the stereo on really low. See if it blows. If not, gradually go up in volume. If it blows, you just need a larger capacity fuse (like 80 amps)

Now, does it blow when you are standing still, or only when you drive??

If its when you drive, its probably the ground shorting out. Otherwise, my bet is on the fuse. Happened to my friend's car, a larger fuse fixed the problem.

well I'm out of fuses as of now.... I have been running this set up for quite a while now without any issues and I was using 60 amps... I was told that anything higher was uneccesary. It blows while I am driving.... I was also told by a friend that it probably has to do with the ground but what exactly does that mean? Is it a simple fix or could it possibly have to do with my amp? I am as to where exactly the ground comes from...

Thanks for all your help.

With the system playing (at the same volume level) see if the fuse blows while sitting stationary for 10 minuets. If it blows (at the same volume level) only when driving you are most likely dealing with a short somewhere. In this case you do not want to add a higher rated fuse until you have located and fixed the short.

This may be a stupid question but I was given some fuses while my system was put in... now I need to buy more... Do I have to go by an audio store or do other places carry them.. Thanks J

I would take a blown one into an auto-parts store and have them help you find the correct replacement fuse.

Also your friend who is talking about a grounding problem, most likely means that a power wire is intermittently grounding out to the frame of the car. This is the definition of a short.
