Default Glassin' material for trunk well

I'm about to do a trunk well install for a rather obsurdly large subwoofer.

Those who have done a trunk well install with fiberglass, how much cloth, mat, resin did you use?

I plan to do a good 3-4 layers all around plus mdf on top.

What oz. glass should i get?

Wheres a good place to buy from?
I hear uscomposites.com is good. Anything cheaper?

how much space did you get with the trunk liner in?

I know some of this info might be in a search, but i want to know from those with personal experience.

Any extra info about your install is appreciated.

Thanks,
-Dan

I did a write up for the S2000 here: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=249358

UScomposites is a good place to get the material you need. I use them myself.

uscomposites is GREAT for material, get the fiberglass mat there

i purchase my carbon fiber and fiberglass from there. make sure when you order, call the order in, sometimes the internet order does not work and they will not receive it.

what type of mat and how much do i need?

im guessing with this, but here is what i thought id need.

1 yard x 50in sheet of tightweave, 8.9 oz cloth,
1 yard x 50in cheet of chopped mat 2.0 oz,
1 gallon 435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin with hardener,
Meguiars Mirror Glaze No.8 11oz mold release wax paste,

does that sound correct?
is that a good amount of material? too much?

this box has to be pretty sturdy..at least comparable to 3/4" mdf.
is that enough?

thanks,
-Dan

You'll need more cloth than that I would say double that if you get Coremat to use as fill. You'll be surprized how much mat you'll use. Use the Coremat (4oz.) to build it up. You can cut it into whatever shape you need. You should pre-soak this stuff in resin first as this will help get the resin deep and soaked into it... then finish it off in the box. Lay them all out in the box, using a little( I stress very little) spray adhesive just to tact them inplace so you can make sure you get all the spaces filled in right.

ur gonna need a lot of mat.

cloth should be used for light building and shape.

the chop mat is where your going to get a lot of strength and stiffness.

if you want to spend a bit more and get the job done quicker use the coremat like darkknight said, also any biaxial cloth will work since it contains the chop mat.

a good 5 layers with the chop mat is very strong, not as many layers can be used with the coremat/biaxial.

id say 2 yards, 3 yards would be PLENTY, but you could get it done with 2 yards of chop mat. the cloth you could use as well, i usually use the cloth as my last layer just to make it kinda smooth and i wont have any sharp edges from the chop mat. if you havent ordered yet, get the coremat or a heavy biaxial because they are extremely strong and you wont be disappointed.

Like I showed in my how-to you should use the weave mat for the outer layer and the chop for the inner build up. This will give you a smooth clean finish on the outside.
I would use 1 yard of woven mat for the outer base and I bet 3 yards of chop mat on the inner to get the soild strength your looking for if you don't use the Coremat.

Are you doing the top in glass as well or just the base?

i plan on doing the well in fiberglass, and then putting on a 3/4" mdf top piece.
i'll put one layer of cloth on top of the mdf top piece so that i can paint it easier and it will help support the 60lb sub !

can someone get me the parts numbers t o order and how much ,lol

this is too confusing.

i found the biaxial stuff on uscomposites, as well. do i use this instead of chop mat? how much, what oz.etc

im guessing ill need 1 yard of cloth for the base layer, 2 yards of biaxial??? for build up. and i have a spare Homedepot cloth new that i can use for the top piece over the mdf. this sound right? or am i wrong again? :haha:

thanks for everyones help. this should be a pretty fun project.

edit: i found the coremat. should i use this or the biaxial? how much should i buy of which one?
