Default GPS, Garmin or Magellin?

I am considering the purchase of a GPS. Right now my choices are either the Garmin Streetpilot 2620 or the Magellin 700. Does anyone have any advice/experience with these?

Whichever unit you suggest needs to be portable as I intend to move it from car to car. Also, I need to be able to see it in the daylight.

Thanks.

I think of all those portable navi systems (not the 2000 dollar ones), Garmin is the leader.

I used a Magellan the other day, ,my son had them installed in his delivery trucks. My only gripe is it's too damn big. The voice unit worked well, I don't know if you could hear it however with the top down,

I have an older garmin chart plotter in my sailboat the magellan was as big as that!

I can't see why people are spending $1500 on a GPS only device that is not spectacular when you can get a Pocket PC based GPS navigation system for 1/2 the price with all of the components needed to make it spectacular AND useful for many more things than just a GPS - plus the upgrades and maps are much better...

Alpine DVD navis are the best navis you can get, period.

I read that Alpine is the best all the time and their data is so out of date it is not even funny. You can get nearly up to the minute data with Pocket PC, Alpine's data is nearly a year old right now. Maybe in NYC where not much changes it is great, but in Phoenix, where every 2 months you have 1000 new roads it is piss poor. My Lexus in car system stinks and I can't imagine buying another in-car system. I didn't post in this thread, but it has some good points.

I've been using the Delorme earthmate GPS with Street Atlas 04. Total cost was $100 and I had a spare laptop. My gripe is that my laptop is so old, equivalent of a 350mhz, so it's a little slow. Other than that, I haven't had any problems; but I prefer the ease of use of my friend's stock TL navi. I just wanted something cheaper than the Alpine setup and even with a pda, you're looking at under $500 and you can do more things with the PDA or laptop

I have had a garmin pda, IQ3600, for almost a year now. I drove the S for a year and the only thing I missed from the Acura MDX was the GPS. First thing I noticed on the garmin was that the maps were much more up to date than what was available from Acura. The screen does wash out though in bright light - probably because I keep it on the dash on the beanbag that garmin supplies with the travel kit. The voice from the speaker that comes with the travel kit is audible even at highway speeds with the top down. I keep addresses in it and it hooks up almost too easily to my old Windows 98 PC to synchronize addresses, etc. I am always amazed when these gadgets work. I usually keep a 256MB chip in it that holds all info for the Southeast US. I would buy another. The only big problem is that the girlfriend takes it from me whenever she goes somewhere on her own. At least I know what to get her for Christmas.
