Default hardwiring x50 with cat5?

I just got a escort passport 8500 x50 and i read you could hardwire it using telephone cable. So i have plenty of cat5 cable running around, but have no knowledge of how to wire stuff. Can someone give me a nice detailed explaination of how i hardwire my detector with cat5? thanks

You use two wires. That's why phone cord is ok to use. You need one line for power, the other for ground.

You will need to verify which one is which based on the cable from the X50, by testing.

I can't find my notes on which one is which.

I know the wire clarification is on S2ki.com. I did not search for you.

My recommendation, IF you have no idea how to wire stuff, is to buy the Escort hard wire kit it is A NO brainer and you can use these instructions.

Hope this helps a little.

I have three hardwire kits (one in each of my cars) and love it.

If you still want to use the cat5, it's not a bad option at all. However, let me ask you a couple of questions. Do you have an RJ11 crimper? If not, then you need to find a way to get an RJ11 end on the cable. There are ways around this (like cutting the end off of the cigarette lighter adapter that came with the 8500, and then splicing it together. This is not a very clean solutiion, and it destroys the cable for any future use.

Usually you would need another die-set or a completely different crimper. It depends on how much you spent on the one you have.

Did you get the complete hardwire kits (with display) or just power wire?

I would kind of like to buy two of the complet kits, but at $30 a pop it makes me hesitant.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could run my own phone line for power, then put in my own "power" and "alert" LEDs in a cool spot.

Anybody know how the two "extra" wires in the power cord are used for LED/MUTE/ALERT?

im not married to the idea of using a cat5, but i am married to the idea of hardwiring. Could i use a phone line. Would it be as simple as just stripping the wire at one end? Then plugging it into the fuse box? If so what do i plug in where, and also, how would i install a fuse?
