Default IT HAS BEGUN..............iPad2 + s2000 dash project underway

I'm sure most of you have followed or read my last Eclipse DD project in my 2005 Rio and although it was a great project at the time, technology has certainly changed! Who the heck carries DVD's and CD's these days anyways?

(The link is in my signature if you want to see how my last project turned out...)

Anyways we are now almost in 2012 and it's pretty evident Apple has taken over the world! We will all miss Steve Jobs but his creation will have an ever lasting impact for sure. The new Ferrari Scuderia uses an iTouch for it's radio source so I figured why not an iPad2 in the s2000.

A few initial obstacles I saw included:

a) iPad2 is too wide horizontally to fit between the temp controls and the airbag
b) Angle and glare will be two big factors to creating a proper source
c) Using a touchscreen is too dangerous while driving so we would still need a DIN radio source
d) Must be seamless in construction, not an ugly eye-sore
e) Unit must be removable for On-the-go but also must be secure

One advantage to using an iPad is obviously the depth is not an issue thus no modification to the passenger vent duct!

So instead of hacking up my 2009 GPW dash, I decided to pick up a spare dash for this project so we can work outside the car but so far here's the project goals:

1) Use Motorization to pivot the iPad2 for ease of removal and security concerns
2) Strip and completely rebuild the dash to fit the unit in a seamless OEM manner
3) Dash will be completely re-upholstered in black ultrasuede with yellow stitching to match seats / Interior
4) iPad2 will dock with an aftermarket deck so we can maintain OEM radio controls and basic AM/FM tuning

here's a picture of what we are going to start with - check back here as we start cutting............

This is what my dash and interior looks like right now:

sub-f@$%ing-scribed!
I've been patiently waiting for someone to tackle the installation of a PiddyPad Duece in the S2K..

Edit:
Just gonna throw this out there... maybe consider using an Audison bit Ten D with it's included DRC? This would allow pretty seamless integration with whatever headunit you already have in the car & pump up the EQ abilities quite a bit.
Also, you may find some useful inspiration/information on the SMCA forums

Very nice! I'll be watching this. I'm working on putting a computer in my car with a 7" touchscreen where your iPad is going. Have part of the computer started, but I've got other things to buy before continuing that project.
