Excellent. After you get over the sting of the unexpected expense, you'll be happy you made that move.

If you are using an external amp, which it sounds like you are from your post, then is garbage. Two things may be the problem.
1) The head unit may be sending a "dirty" signal, as it needs to be attenuated before it goes through the amp. This is why most recommend a new head unit.
2) They might not be using a line level converter before the amp. Some amps come with these in them, others do not. If yours does not, the speaker level signal coming out of your stock head has to be converted (attenuated) before it can go into the amp. If it still sounds bad, read #1 above.

1) is correct. The head unit sends the nastiest, dirtiest sound quality that you'll ever hear. Now that your speakers are great you can really here just how crap the stock HU is. Upgrading your headunit will fix all of your SQ issues. I went four days with the stock headunit and MBQ's and it was seriously painful. Most of the time I chose to listen to the engine and skip the HU altogether.

ohh yeah btw, my friend with an 03 s2k (same stock head unit) he had the shitty stock head unit run Diamond Audio HEX components with 12" JL W6 sub and Alpine F340 amp, and his turn out to be just fine... unlike mine.. sounds like the speakers are blown... unsolve mystery eh?

For you though, upgrade the HU as soon as you can. You'll love it!

Could be something with the MB Quart crossovers. I just chalked it up to a crappy HU, but it certainly could be other things. My stock system sounded bad with stock speakers and much worse with the MBQ's in place. I figured it was like hearing Pavarati sing through a few matress pads. That is, awesome sound reproduction from the speakers of a terrible signal. If your friends car sounded okay then maybe that's not the case.

humm... well they did try it with an aftermarket (i think it was a cheap alpine) headunit, and it sounded great... so i guess the problem is the headunit after all
hehe... i know!!.. can't wait!!
ohh yeah before i forget... do you guys know if the audio control on the left hand side by the "start" button would work after i install a new headunit?? if not what kind of harness do i need to make that work, i really don't wanna sacrifice those function
thanks,
Mike
