Default Help me on deciding Stereo System!

I decided to get Alpine 9883 (HU) and SPR 17s (speaker). What kind amp and sub should be best with those two? Any recommendation would be great.
Thank you guys...

can't go wrong with jl audio if you have the money. My 10w6v2 hits hard and clean like no other I have heard.

I went to car toys today. They were asking $2500 for focal 165 kf, Alpine 9883, JL 10" sub, DCI, amp and fiberglass for amp above the tools and sub on the left side of trunk. Only fiberglass was $600. Wow I'll never go to Car Toys again. I have to look for some good local shop.

1500 is plenty for a sub and amp combo. I would suggest going with my setup

-JL Audio 500/1
-JL Audio 10w6v2
-Custom Flush Box (can be had on ebay): $100
-Installation for amps usually run anywhere from 60-100 bucks.

There is a pretty big difference when you purchase it from an unauthorized and authorized dealer. Its up to you. If price is not a factor, then I suggest going with an authorized dealer in your area for warranty and piece of mind.

I thought that the $1,500 was to cover all items, not just sub/amp/install... If that's the case, then you can figure around the following amounts as fair for installation:

HU: ~$50
Speakers: $60-80
Amp: $60-80 (assume single 4-channel)

Then figure ~$100 for power/speaker wire and RCA cables for the amp.

As mentioned above, you'll be able to buy 30-40% more online from an unauthorized dealer. If you are going to play the odds, I'd say you're safer buying speakers w/o warranty (mechanical, less to go wrong), and paying more for the electronics so they are covered.

Consider buying a sub-box from forum sponsor wlaurent www.darksidesubs.com and an amp rack from forum member PAS2KNut that replaces your spare tire. Send him a PM.

That leaves a little under $1k for HU, amp, speakers and sub.

The Alpine 9883 you mention is being sold by ABT electronics (an authorized dealer local to me) for $177 and free shipping, so I wouldn't pay more than that from someone local to you (or just order from ABT http://www.abtelectronics.com/scripts/site...roogle&id=27901).

For speakers, one question you want to think about is do you like your music detailed to the point that it can be "harsh/sharp" (cymbal hits and 's' vocals will have shimmer/etch) or smooth but perhaps a bit laid back. If the former, then you're more likely to find it in sets with a tweeter made of a metal (aluminum, titanium, etc), vs silk/fabric/textile tweeters are more likely to be on the smooth side. Not a rule, but a decent generalization.

You mentioned the Focal 165KFs, which are nice speakers. I think Focals in general are a bit "forward" sounding, but liked the KFs better than the higher end ones in the line. That said, they are still expensive speakers, and perhaps not worth the incremental price difference in an S2000.

Some popular speaker recommendations are Infinity Reference/Kappa, Polk db, Alpine Type-R. Some others to consider: a/d/s (a favorite of mine, they are pretty much out of business, but speakers are very nice sounding and can be found new on ebay). You'd be looking for a set ending in a 6, so 236/246/336/346. The first digit of 2/3 indicates the model line, but the tweeter is the same in both. Crossover is a bit better in 3 series, and midrange is a different material, but both are good. another speaker line mostly found online is CDT.

Should probably end up ~$200-300 for component speakers.

Now down to ~$500-600 for a sub and amp.

You could just buy a sub with the box from wlaurent, or you can find something else to fit. JL Audio subs are very popular choices. As recommended above, the JL 10w6v2 is a nice sub, but you might be happy enough with the less expensive (and less power hungry) 10w3v3 or even the 10w1v2. I also like the Infinity Perfect subs, but not sure they are still made. Crutchfield is showing only reference and Kappa subs now.

I have an Infinity Perfect 10 that I am looking to get rid of at the moment, so send me a PM if you are interested.

For an amp, you'll probably want a 4 channel amp where the rear 2 channels can be bridged to power the sub. I am using an old PPI amp that I had in a previous car, so am not as up to date on what is good these days. I would be cautious with inexpensive amps that tout high power ratings. Generally, high power comes at a cost if it's "good power." Look at the power ratings when resistance drops from 4 to 2 ohms, or when bridged. A good amp will show near double power increases for the impedance drop, and up to 4x the power for bridging (i.e., a 50x4 @4ohm amp, bridging the two rear channels, could deliver 200w @4ohm, in addition to the 50x2 of the front channels).

I've read some good things about the JBL GTO amps (you can see them at crutchfield), and they seem reasonably priced. JL amps seem nice, but somewhat pricey.

Hope that helps,
Phil

I need some help on the amp too.

I'm planning to get Alpine IDA-X100(HU), Alpine Spr17s(speaker)
, Alpine Type R 12" sub 2ohms (rms 500watts).

Does IDA-X100 provide enough power for Spr17s?
Should I buy 5channel amp or just mono amp for the sub or 4channel+mono combo?

I know this is a noob question but what do you guys think?
