Default help wanted

help I have just purchased an archos multimedia player, when I connected it to the aux in on a clarion head unit the clarion's own vol control is either all or nothing, with my very limited knowledge of electronics I am guessing the impedance of the archos line out is to low as it doubles for the headphone out, I was thinking of making an lead with resistors in what value do you think these should be?

Headphone outputs generally have a 32 ohm impedance, but I've seen as high as 300 ohms. Either way, this wouldn't provide me with a reasonable explanation as to why the volume is either full on or full off.
