Default HELPING on what to do!!!

Hi all,

Since I ordered my 02' s2k last friday 17th of August I'm constantly thinking about acquiring a DVD GPS system.

The problem is that I'm the most meticulous person in the world and I want to install it by myself without having previous experience in this kind of installation. I'm thinking about install these 1-DIN equipments (radio-CD + DVD reader unit or radio-DVD + CD reader unit -I'll install the reader unit, CD or DVD, under the passenger's seat-) avoiding to install a separated TV monitor.

About installation steps -related with my concerns-:

1. Where (and how to) install the GPS antenna?
2. How to found and connect (bus or single wire?) the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wire?. The pulses are analogic or digital?
3. How to found and connect (bus or single wire?) the reverse gear wire (needed for autonomous -without GPS signal- driving)?
4. How to found and connect (bus or single wire?) the dashboard light signal wire (needed for night driving)?
5. How to pass the wires between the radio unit and CD/DVD reader unit (from dashboard to passenger's seat)?
6. It's difficult to calibrate the GPS system after install it? it depends on the equipment?
7. Time for your own concerns ...

Keep in mind that my car will be a LEFT steering wheel

It's really difficult to successfully install it? Buy or not to buy, that's the question

Thanks in advance

First you may want to consider how the screen is going to fit (and flip out from) behind the shifter...

Its not going to be an easy install but its possible.

1. Its best to get the antenna on the outside of the car, best place would probably be the rear deck, but you can get away with it putting it inside. But has to be like 6" from say the A pillar.

2. The VSS wire would be 3rd pin Connector C on the gauges (looks like the OEM radio plug) / digital
3. The reverse switch would have to be tapped at the gearbox itself its a green wire(and some other color)
4. ?? dont know what unit or what youre doing.
5. Use the radio illumination
6. have to sync the gyros, follow the manual, if you got this far it should be cake

I mentioned before the best place for a screen would be the visor. If you want it perfect, take the visor to a shop and/or buy a new on that will work with the car and have the LCD screen mounted in there.

MacGyver,

I've been thinking about where to fit the screen... I'll have to check if there is space between the dashboard and the shifter (and not only space, I'm going to be careful with the dashboard's inclination/angle)... I think that these 1-DIN with screen, can be regulated

Lucid,

about...

1. I'll install the GPS antenna on the dashboard, near the end of the front glass. My problem is how to pass the GPS antenna's wire

2. Where is it located? I can't understand what means 'gauges'

3. Where is it located? maybe below (near) the shifter?

4. Where is it located?

I'm thinking about buy one of these models:

Kenwood KVT-920DVD and KNA-DV2200
Pioneer AVIC-9DVD

A 1-DIN "fold-out" monitor will not work in the stock location... I tried. That's why I made a new mounting location... and mounted the 6-disc changer in the stock headunit location (since it was now empty).

I mounted the GPS antenna dead-center by the windshield (in the little flat section of dash between the two long defroster vents). Since the dash was out, I just ran the wire from the antenna between the dash and the firewall (there is compressable foam at the interface... a little cut in the foam lets the wire pass inseen).

I'll add my $.02 too:

1. You could probably get away with the GPS antenna mounted on the underside of the 'Secret Compartment. Since the roof is plastic, not solid metal it should work as well here as it does beneath the windshield. This would provide a nice 'stealth' install, although the roll bar hoops may block some of the lower satellites. You could also put the wire up under the plastic cover on the hoops and mount the antenna on the top of one of the hoops, it might be less noticeable than on the dashboard and should have better reception than on the dash.
2-5 You really should purchase the electrical helm manual. This will manual describes each connector in the car, shows photos of their locations, which wires are what, etc... Everything you will need to connect to is described in detail here.

I would also double check the clearance under the seat, there just isn't much room here and the reader may not fit. I tried to slide my laptop computer under the passenger side during a trip and it wouldn't fit, it's only 1.25" thick. It did fit under the drivers, it seems to depend on how far back the seat is, the farther back, the less clearance there is.

It seems possible to me that you may have a skipping problem with the DVD since the suspension and frame is so tight on this car. Shaner may be able to comment on this.

I put my NVA-851A DVD navigation module under my seat (like MikeS2K did) but I mounted it to the seat and not the floor... this way the box moves with the seat (even though you really never need to access it). I just alotted a little extra cable for the movability...
