Honda Music Link works
The Music Link cable was easy to install in the trunk as described by others in other threads. Never did get a response (or find information) about getting the rear console out for the 'complete' install (although I did hear that it's not easy) ... maybe keeping the iPod in the trunk will stop me from even thinking about checking it while driving ;-) Setting up the iPod before connecting it to the cable allowed me to use disc buttons 5 and 6 and the skip/seek button to play podcasts (or music). It worked. Nice volume, much better quality than the FM transmitter approach I was using.
However, I thought it should be possible to use the TTS software for more functionality. There is a discussion about not using Auto sync but use Manual selection of playlists. Wasn't sure what the problem might be but it turned out the Auto sync so far works just fine.
I downloaded the latest version of the TTS software (v 1.3) from the Honda website and had the latest version of iTunes (Mac v7.0.2). Restarted my computer, connected the iPod and the TTS software started up automatically asking me to update my iTunes (and iPod?). They were up-to-date so I just clicked on proceed. The software started indexing the iPod but after about 5-6 songs it quit with the error (something about a playlist not available - from memory). I had a few artists, song titles that had some 'strange' characters. I edited some of that information. Maybe it helped. Next time through it seemed to work indexing happily, indicating that it would take increasingly longer times to finish. When it got to over 7000 minutes I left the machine awhile. ;-) The screen saver had kicked in when I returned and I had to hard restart the computer. Restarted the computer, put my iPod in the dock, iTunes started, TTS software started, told me to upgrade, ignored and pressed proceed, and now it started creating small files for each artist, playlist, song title, and genre. Took about 15-20 minutes for quite a few songs. It seemed to be working. It also created 16 playlist with names such as 'ZZZTTSA01'. I set iTunes to automatically update all those playlists as well as the few I already had set to sync. One last sync and off to my car.
It works as described in the manual I downloaded with the latest version of the sotware. It is a bit involved. Use the 5/6 buttons to select disc 1 through 6. You can use disc 5 and 6 without the TTS software. For example, selecting disc 2 allows you to select by artist. Press Seek for 1 sec (it beeps), let go and you will hear the first letter. Press and release Seek when you hear the letter of the artist you want. Now (quickly) press and hold the Seek button for 1 sec (beep) and you will hear the names of each artist with the selected first letter. Press Seek as soon as you hear the artist. Playlist, album, genre (1, 3, 4) work the same.
Much of this is well described in the manual but it took a few tries to get the timing right. Probably best done while parked or by your co-pilot.
