How do hertz (hz) relate to instruments or sounds?
i will post if i finalize anything...
well, i'm not using an RTA to do things, just my ears. and i'll admit that they can be unreliable. right now, i'm bouncing around... i will make some tweaks and changes that i think sound good, but when i compare them to baseline or previous settings, i'm not as convinced... so, i'm finding that 'the right' sound is eluding me more than i thought... i'll clean up one area of the spectrum, but end up washing out or over emphasizing others in the process. i'm mostly playing around w/ various musical sources, but i may need to slot out some serious time to work w/ test tones and pink noise.

Especially 'cause CDs can vary so much as well....so you're forced to rely on the pink noise and let the CDs fall where they may!
I am trying to tweak my tuning, and it is getting kinda annoying. The apparent EQ in the "menu" option of the 9851 I have (the one with the treble and bass options that breaks it down into frequencies that you can either boost or degrade) is not letting my boost / degrade any specific frequency. If am trying to turn down the 15khtz option, but when I adjust 1 of the frequencies up / down, they ALL go up / down (7.5 khtz - 15 khtz). What is the point of this thing if you cannot tune the specific frequencies without the others being effected (it is acting the same as a general "treble" and "bass" gain, negating the individual listed frequencies)? It is getting damn annoying! If anyone knows of anything that I have turned on that I should not have turned on that could be effecting this, please let me know before I shoot my head unit! Thanks
John

and John.... *looks around*
umm.
check out this flash PEQ (single band) demo: http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/Parametri...ametric_EQ.html
now, realize that you've got only 2 PEQ bands on that HU. a low and a high. so, you're adjusting the frequency, width, and level all independently.
if you want to adjust all those frequencies, you need a more advanced EQ. as it stands, you're only adjusting 2 frequencies at a time. the ones you currently have selected. as you select different frequencies, the peak of the curve is what is moving.
don't worry... worse mistakes have been made here.
ok -- while i still haven't finished tinkering w/ my EQ settings (mainly, haven't had the time w/ the change in jobs)...
here's a link to DJWeaver's thread where he had his system in the S professionally tuned. lots of good EQ info in there.
