I know nothing about audio. Component speakers
OK I am planning on getting some component speakers as a start to make my audio sound better. Right now I have the stock head unit and stock door speakers. I am planning on getting these component speakers(unless someone would advise otherwise)Component speakers
Do I need to get an amp for these to work? If I don't get an amp will it sound better? Do I need anything else to make these work with the stock head unit? I know I will have to cut tweeter holes in my doors. If I do need an amp what is the cheapest amp I can get that will provide enough power for these two speakers? I eventually want a small 10" or so sub for my trunk. I need a separate amp for that correct?
I really don't understand the whole audio terms and all so if someone could explain what I need in simpleton terms would be great hahaha.
Thanks. -----Ryan.
The amp and the head deck is the guts of the system. You really do not want to skimp on these items. Get a reputable brand like Alpine, Clarion, Pioneer, or similar which should give you clean signal. One 4-channel amp about 150 rms per channel should give you enough to power your splits and brigdging the other two channels should be suffice to run the sub.
Get a new headunit first. Everyone will tell you so. If you get new component speakers and run them off the stock headunit, you are still running crappy power to these new speakers, and they will sound almost as bad as stocks.
HU first, speakers second.
and, IMHO, you do NOT need to amp component speakers to get amazing quality. I can crank my volume up to max and get crystal clear audio, and make my ears blled at the same time. I would personally do HU, then speakers. THEN, if you want to destroy your hearing or get more quality, THEN amp 'em up.
If you need a picture-by-picture DIY on how to install speakers, I wrote one a couple of months ago, but it was never sticky'd. Reply if you want it and i will dig it up!

a speaker that requires 100watts RMS does not need to be fed nothing but distortion from 18watts rms at full volume :-) That's how you blow speakers, not by over powering or underpowering, but feeding distortion into them. How do you create distortion? By "Cranking" a radio. It reaches it's clipping point (or when DC turns to AC) and causes the voice coil to heat up and melt to the basket, then the speaker is blown

OK no head units maintain the factory dash controls without buying the harness to have them work right? Thats one reason I didn't want to change the head unit. Also do all single din head units fit behind the door with it closed fine?
