Default I thought I knew what I was doing

Hey electronic gurus...

I finaly pulled my OEM HU and Door speakers and replaced them with:

-Alpine 9827 HU
-Alpine T450 AMP
-Kenwood Excelon 6.5" 2-way Dual Mag Premium Door Speaker
-Kenwood Excelon 5.25" Rear Speaker System
-MTX Thunder 6000 - T6104A Subwoofers
-DCI Unit for dash controls
-Used RCA gold tip plugs to hook HU to AMP, 4 Guage power and ground cable for AMP, normal speaker cable from AMP back to speakers. Also took positiveside of a speaker cable and ran from HU to AMP for "Power Control" (Fo rthe AMP to shut down if HU is turned off.

After fitting and hooking everything up, I ran a quick test to assure that all the components were working before final install. Everthing was functiong as expected so the final install was done. Once everthing was mounted in place and screwed down, everthing was still working. I thought I was in good shape.

I then started the recommended programming of the HU and AMP:
On HU: turn off HU amp, changed preferred settings, subwoofer controls and so on -

On AMP: Set gains, filters... In the instructions for Gain settings, the manual indicated to turn the HU volume until distortion starts (distortion started around volume level 25), then lower by a notch. Then change the gain on the AMP until you hear distortion and then turn it back a notch. This apparently maximized the output of the HU and AMP you are running. The system sounded great.

Then my problem began... Wanted to have my co-driver check out the fruits of my labor so we got in the car and listened to a CD (parked in the garage). Volume on the HU was set at about 16 (maybe half HU max?). All of a sudden the HU shut down and reset itself. Seemed to be working fine after that with lower volume setting. Then about 5 minutes later the HU shut down again (we were between volume setting 16 - 20) and reset itself again. It was getting late, so I decided to address it in the morning. Attempted to start the MY01 to reposition in Garage and to my surprise a rapid click-click-click-click, but no start. Figured I ran the battery low with all the testing and playing, so I attempted to jump the car and again a rapid click-click-click-click. Disconnected the AMP from the battery terminal just to make sure that was not the problem and tried to start the car one last time, well... just click-click-click-click again. Gave up and went to bed. Was unable to check it out this morning, but attempted to start the car before leaving for work. It tried to start for a second and then the click-click-click-click ocurred again.

So I need some help... First I need to address the HU cutting out. What could be causing this? Bad Ground? To much juice? Then I need to figure out how to get the car started or better yet what to check. Hoping I did not fry anything (like the starter or alternator), but it is to early to tell. Should be able to get back to it tonight.

Please help... Any recommendations you can give me would be great. I'm not real electronic savy so please keep that in mind when answering.

Thanks so much for any assistance you can give.

Your battery is dead. To jump start it, be sure to connect it to the doner car, and let the doner car run for about 10 minutes. Then try to start the S (all the while connected with the other car running.) Let it run for about 10 mins then disconnect. Drive the car for at least 30 mins to recharge the battery. Drive the car for at least 30 mins every day for a week to recondition the battery.

As to the HU, it seems to me like you have a short in the power somewhere.

I just installed a head unit (and other components) and ran the battery down. I had the same problem with the head unit cutting out. Although I agree with ruexp67 about the short, in this case I believe the HU could be cutting out due to low voltage. This is what happened to me.

After I jumped the car and let her run for a while everything worked great!

Get the battery charged and test the HU, if it is still cutting out look for the short.

You should not have any problems with the way you wired your remote turn on.

the HU is dropping out due to low voltage.

jocko2's dead right though -- i was glad to read you didn't use a speaker output for the amp turn on signal. the size of wire for that service really won't matter as long as it's better than (something like) a 24 gauge or so... speaker wire is fine.

chances are though that your battery will never hold a charge like it used to now that you've drained it that low. you should plan for a new battery within the next year or so.

Guys... This is all great news... If it is the battery, not a big deal... was looking to upgrade to a much lighter battery anyway. I'll give her a jump tonight and see what happens, but will order the new battery anyway.

Off hand, do you know if any of our sponsors carry a preferred battery (Optima Yellow, Lightning Audio...etc...) and do you have a recommended preference?

Appreciate all of your comments and will let you know what happened in the morning.

Thanks much!

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday when I installed 2 amps.... dead battery. Luckly I gave it a jump and all is good again. I'm planning to upgrade my stock panasonic battery to a yellow top soon though.

Nothing to worry about dude..!
