Default Ignition Cylinder Damage - Theft

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right subforum for this post so feel free to move as needed.

Basically some moron broke into my AP1 and tried to steal it but was unsuccessful at doing anything but vandalizing the car. Damaged windshield frame, cracked windshield, bent softtop brackets and soft top frame, destroyed ignition key cylinder.

My problem is that he managed to turn the steering wheel until it locked so the wheels are no longer straight. The key goes into the ignition but I'm not sure if it's going in far enough or what's going on because it will not turn, I'm guessing since the steering wheel is in the locked position. I tried yanking it and turning the key but it would not turn. I need to move the vehicle so I can store it in the garage while the body shop waits for the parts to come in.

Is there anyway to bypass the steering wheel lock temporarily? I'm not running the stock ECU and my key doesn't have a chip in it for the immobilizer as that's not being used since I'm running an AEM V2.

Any ideas on what I can do would be appreciated.

Thanks

My guess he damaged something with the lock cylinder and now it won't turn.

Since lock won't turn, it won't unlock steering. Maybe the wheels pressing against lock is also making it difficult, even though you're turning steering to unload it from pressing against lock, which as you mentioned, is normally what keeps lock from turning.

My only suggestion is finish his work, completely remove lock cylinder which should also unlock steering.

first thing i would try is loosening the 4 bolts that hold the steering tube on in the driver footwell. might be thats it's just been twisted and will spring free once the bolts are loosened.

you should only need to remove the lower cover in step 3 and then you can get acess to the front 2 nuts. rear 2 bolt should be acessible anyway

If you just need to straighten the wheels so you can push it directionally straight into the garage you could pop the tie rod ends loose from the knuckle and straighten each wheel then carefully push into the garage.

If your path to get into the garage is more complicated and involves turns this may not be as easily feasible.

That's not a bad idea at all but unfortunately like you mentioned I do need to have some turning ability.
