Default iphone3g chargers

so ive got my new iphone3g, and am working up how to get power to it when its mounted. i figure i can buy a 12v socket to wire under the dash, and run the connector to the ipod through the vents in the radio door. what i would like input on is what wires i should use to wire in the 12v socket, or if its even gonna work that way.

i only need power goin to it, and dont wanna use the cig lighter behind the armrest.

TIA!

I'd run the charger cable to the accessory tap at the fuse panel (or use an Add A Fuse).

EDIT: If you have the factory radio you could also buy an iPod adapter to connect your iPhone to your radio which would allow you to not only charge your ipod, but also listen to your music through your stereo. Such examples would be Blitzsafe, Dice, USAspec, Gromaudio, etc.

I just set this up in my car last night. it's still apart so I'll take some pictures and post it up.

I used the power going to the cigarette lighter since it's already only on when the key is on, the power line is already fused, and it's close to the center console. I purchased a female power port and a car ipod/iphone charger, soldered the female power port into the cigarette lighter power just plugged the charger into that. I taped it up good so it won't come apart or rattle and tucked it all under the the console. then I just fed the wire from the charger into the compartment where I'll keep my ipod or iphone.

I had my radio controlling the ipod before but it's uber slow switching songs and artists and I wanted to play pandora from my iphone. so I switched to a 1/8th" input on my head unit and added the power to keep from powning my battery on trips. if you connect your iphone to the radio like an ipod and have the radio control it you'll only get the songs in your library. connecting it the way I am will let you get sound from any app including all the music streaming apps.

candymanjl,

I use the Blitzsafe adapter which only acts as a cd changer and doesn't allow me to control the iPod from the radio, it just allows the ipod to output sound to factory radio and chargers the ipod at the same time (all song selection is made on the iPod itself and not on the radio). I like this setup as navigating is much faster on the iPod than using the radio (as you stated). This should work for the iPhone as well and you wont have two cables to worry about (1/8 and power adapter).

for what it's worth here's what I did. I was partway done before I started taking pictures but here's the female power port already soldered into the power and ground feeding the regular power outlet and my iphone/ipod charger plugged into it. I taped it up with gaff tape to keep it from coming apart and so I don't hear it rattle on the metal.

then I tucked it under the center console...

I dremeled a hole just big enough for the charger plug to go into the center compartment along with the 1/8" stereo plug going to my HU. now I can plug in either my ipod or iphone and get the music to my HU. so far I really like it, changing artists and songs is a ton faster now compared to doing it through the HU. and with the iphone plugged in this way I have Pandora in the car which is pretty sick.

another cool thing is if you are using the ipod while on the charger and then the power goes off (when you shut off the car there's no power to the power outlet) the ipod will pause then turn off after a minute or so. so when you come back the battery won't be dead and you'll still be on the same track.

Nice write up. The Blitzsafe adapter I got also pauses the ipod when I turn the car off (great feature). What shift knob is that?

it's the spun aluminum one from rick's s2k, it's the one they say matches the 04+ aluminum color...

cool thing if you order it engraved they leave this protective rubber coating on it from when they engrave it (so they don't scratch it). since they leave that on it's super easy to paint the shift pattern (or whatever logo) then just peel off the rubber to leave only the pattern painted. I was boring and just painted it red to me the best part is that it sits about an inch lower than the stock shift knob so it's kinda like a shift knob and short shifter kit all in one

the funny part about them leaving the coating one was that I didn't know they did that so when I opened the box. so I was a little concerned at first when I took a red coated shift knob out of the box
