Ipod car connection
I can't speak for that exact combo, but many people have complained
about inadequate volume from MP3 players plugged in through an AUX IN -
in many cases the headunit is expecting a higher voltage signal than the
player produces.

the only disadvantage i see to this is that it wouldn't charge the ipod, but i guess you win some, you lose some.
The Belkin unit powers the iPod AND gives you a line-level output from the iPod dock connector which can then be used to input to a HU with an auxiliary input (such as an Alpine that can be used with the KCA-121B cable).
You will still need the RCA to mini jack adapter as the line-level output on the Belkin unit is a 3.5mm (mini) jack.
It is certainly not an elegant installation, but it is a way around Alpine's Full Speed connection for which you requested.

However, I have not had this issue when using the above mentioned Belkin unit as it:
1) uses the line-level output from the iPod through the iPod's dock connector, and
2) has a built-in amplifier to boost the signal.
But again, I only used this type of connection when iPod interfaces were not yet as readily available as they are now.
The Dension Ice>Link is an iPod interface for most head units that retains the iPod controls.

Thanks for clarifying 00civicSi. Did you happen to take any pics of this set up when you had it? Just wondering how "messy" all this would look installed?
Since my g/f would only use the iPod on longer rides, she'd just plug the Belkin unit into the factory outlet (I offered to install an additional outlet behind the dash for a more permanent install, but she didn't feel the need). There was only one black wire (mini-to RCA) that came out from under the console from the auxiliary interface (and was otherwise hidden beside the seat). Not messy at all.
Being that the S is already relatively cramped and the factory outlet is nowhere near the dash, I would not consider this arrangement (actually, I wouldn't because now there are iPod interfaces that work with the stock HU and plenty of aftermarket HUs with perfectly useful interfaces of their own).
I can't comment about cramming all of these components (KCA-121B, mini-to-RCA wire, additional accessory outlet, Belkin unit) behind the dash of the S, as I've yet to pull my HU. I'd imagine it'd be tight.
Ultimately, I agree with others that suggest just getting a HU with an interface that best meets your interests. Or better yet, just get a dedicated HDD that plugs into the USB interface on a lot of newer HUs.
