iPod not necessarily the best choice.
PCPro magazine tested 18 different units which included "better and cheaper alternatives available" than the iPod. Here's the article from the BBC News site:

I have never liked Apple. I worked with the Apple ][e, I worked with the original Mac, I have seen the new ones, OSX, ect, ect, ect. Never had ANY interest in ANY of their products.
I had an Archos 20GB jukebox. It was a complete POS. If you had too long of a playlist, the unit could not deal with the random of it, and you would hear the same 20-30 songs no matter how many you had on the unit. The interface was cluncky. When it broke, I took it back to BB under the extended waranty and decided to try the 20B iPod. I had to buy a firewire card, but they gave me the full purchase price of the Archos toward the iPod. I still spent about what I paid for the Archos (so the iPod was double the price.)
The headphones sound like loudspeakers, the interface is clean, the transfers are fast, the random play is pretty good (not perfect.)
I love the iPod.

I have an Iriver IHP-140 40 Gig mp3 player in my S and it is great. I had several reasons for picking the Iriver over the Ipod.
1) The sound is better than the Ipod
2) It looks like a USB drive to my PC so it is easy to transfer music and to backup my digital photos
3) The Iriver cost $370, the Ipod was $500
I keep the Iriver in the mesh by the passenger's feet and wire it into the HU with a PIE adapter. The remote works great for picking albums to listen to. I can have the remote in my hand and read it while I'm still holding the steering wheel.
