Default just bought custom box.

Hey-

I just bought a MDF box for a 10" sub. It is sealed now. It is 1.2CF of volume. Can I port this box? If so, what should the port diameter / length be? I have a Clarion SW10x sub. The specs are :

Size: 10 inch
Rec. Sealed Box Dims: 0.70 cu.ft.
Rec. Ported Box Dims: 2.20 cu.ft.
Free Air Usage: not recommended
Sensitivity: 81 dB
Frequency Response: 35-500 Hz
Recommended RMS Power: 300W
Peak Power Handling: 600W
Impedance: 4 ohms subwoofer wiring options

I know the size is not what the specs say for porting, but they may be counting on a larger port. The box is oversized for the sealed box spec. Will the oversizing hurt / help the sub? What should I do with this size box to make it the most efficient.

thanks

John

Is this box for the tool well? If so, 1.2CF with an MDF box does not sound right (unless it's not flush?), it's probably around 0.8-0.9 which is a good match for your sub.

I would not hack the box.

I emailed the guy who maid it. He said 1.2 cubes. The photos showed in mounting flush. Dunno how he did it, but he did. I think he made it outta 1/2 or 1/4 stuff then re-inforced the walls for form to the well (fits tight). I will measure it when it comes in. If it IS 1.2CF, can I port it? With a small port?

I am used to a bandpass setup and going from that to a sealed enclosure (I have been told) there is a big difference....and it is REALLY hard and expensive to get a bandpass configuration for our cars.

So I took the time to model up the sub on winisd with the t/s parameters listed on the Clarion site. The driver has a very high QTC and it'll probably play really peaky in that box right around 50hz. If you put in a port with a tuning frequency of 33hz, you're looking at a real long port 2x12" port. It's not gonna sound good at all but probably be really noisy.

i would not port such a small box. you are asking for very loose bass.

thanks guys. I will not hack the box. I guess I will have to see how loud it is like it is first. Is 283WRMS to a 10" sub enough to hear? I am not looking for thumping power, just a fuller sound.

i am a believer in overpowering, i don't think 283 is overpowering. but if that's waht you've got then try it. if you don't like it, add more power.
