Default Kenwood amps any good?

A friend of mine let me know he's trying to get rid of his system (from an Accord). I know the amp is a Kenwood KAC-8101D 1000 watt amp. He had it hooked up to two subs (not sure if they are 10s or 12s). They are JL Audio and I will find out which model later. I'm thinking of offering to buy the amp and one sub.

I will let you guys know of the model of the sub probably by tonight.

I figure this may be a decent budget sound system.

Sorry but thats a crappy amp.
You know its crappy when they call it a 1000w amp when it actually does 200x1 @4ohms and 400x1 @2ohms.
I wouldn't buy that amp for $50.
Crutchfield has the Clarion DPX1851 that does 450x1 @4ohms and 850x1 @2ohms.
Its $150 shipped but you can find a coupon for another $20 off to make it $130 shipped.
Personally I think its the best deal for a quality amp.

Appreciate the response. I did think that was funny as well.

So the subs he has are 10w3v2-D2 JL audios.
300 watts rms (but from what I remember JL subs can take a bit more rms than advertised).

Should I just buy one sub and purchase another amp? I understand you stating the amp is crappy but if I can get it dirt cheap, why not? He was running two subs on it and honestly it was pretty loud. I figure I will run it at 2ohms 400watts to one sub.

The 10w3 is fine for a car like ours.
I still have a 10w1 left over that I'm still using and its ok.
Thats a dual 2ohm sub so if you are running just that 1 sub, you will have to run it at 4ohms or 1ohms.....can't run that at 2ohms by itself.
You are not going to give the sub sufficient power with that amp since it will run 200w @ 4ohms.

Sounds like I should pick up the 10w3 and run the Clarion 4ohms for 450 watts.

Now I gotta figure out an enclosure

Actually I was looking at the Kenwood specs and at 1ohm it will output 500watts rms. I know it's not a "quality" amp by most standards but if I can get it for cheap why not?

I like the newer Kenwood eXcelon amps. Try this one on for size if you need over 1000W RMS.

Or if you don't need that much power, this one should fit under the seat just fine.
