Default LED light output?

Ok done some searching but haven't found a great answer. Thinking about going all LED, just because. Know about the hyper-blink issue and tail-light LED not being bright enough(not a problem MY04). The one question I'm curious about is how do LED parking lights, turn signal lights, etc... compare in light output to regular bulbs. Brighter, dimmer, or comparable. Thanks.

Depends on the bulb, of course. You could stare at the lightbulbs behind the instrument panel (5W?) and not be bothered, but try staring at one of my LEDs (1700+ mcd) and you'll see dark spots for a while.

The trouble in comparison is the difference in how light output is measured between LEDs and lightbulbs. Best I can do in a short space is give you a basic comparison. The typical LEDs you buy at Radio Shack might be 5-20 mcd (millicandela)...the brighter end of this scale might be similar to the green LEDs lighting up the fan control switch. If you've ever seen my LEDs in use before, that's about 1.5-2.0 Cd (candela), which give you the same point brightness of a 60-75W bulb, with some brighter versions of LEDs (and more expensive) being between 5-25 Cd (those are in the $15-$150 range).

There's no easy direct comparison possible. I have some more information on LEDs on the Tech page of my website...

Thanks for the info!

Basiclly I'm looking at replacing front/rear turn signals, parking lights, side markers and back up lights with LEDs and want to see if I'm going to have a reduction in light output by switching. Mostly curious about being bright enough to be safe. I know people have done this conversion. Subjetive light outputs? Does your LED seem as light, lighter, or dimmer than the stock bulbs you replaced? Thanks all!

I would NOT do LEDS in the Tail lamps and rear brake lights.

LEDs require special lenses to make them brights, which the s2k doesnt have. if you put LEDs into the tail lights or the brake lights, they will be almost invisible in daylight, and considerable less bright at night. Just something to think about.
And Yes, Ive tried it.

For backup lights, I suggest white Luxeons...a 5 cd version will cost you about $25 and light up the area behind the car nicely (if it doesn't blind the people behind you ).

Definitely not, the LED will need to be modified to fit into a base, but I think the results would be grand.

(Oh, and Steve? Judging by your avatar, have you gone, ahem...happy....on us? )
