I can't seem to find a good parametric equalizer for auto use. Some EQ's I've seen will have one of the bands with an adjustable center frequency but they don't have an adjustment for Q (bandwidth) and don't even tell you what the bandwidth is. What I really want is a 2 or 3-band EQ where all 3 bands are in the bass region (20-150Hz) and are true parametrics - adjustable boost/cut, adjustable center frequency, and adjustable Q.
What is really annoying is I can find professional EQ's with 5 true parametric bands for $70-$100 (with 3 of the bands in the bass region). Trouble is they're made to fit a 19" rack, run on 120VAC, and weigh 10 pounds. The auto EQ's I've found that don't do diddly (by comparison) cost $300. Something's wrong with that.
If you happen to own an alpine HU, try looking into the PXA-H701 processor. If i recall correctly, it has a total of 165 bands of equalization, there is a section for sub equaliztion.
I would suggest making something like this on your own. It's only a handful of components, and each section is identical to the others. A quad op-amp chip (plus caps/resistors) would give you 4 bands in one 14-pin IC. Add in a voltage regulator and some slide pots and you have something essentially as good as what you'd find in any slick looking case.
Edit: I see, you want three knobs in the bass region for $150. No one makes that. The 30-band Eclipse EQ will do it, but you'll pay [through the nose, $1,300] for it.
The link I posted had a parametric EQ: Eclipse 21010 5-Band Graphic/1-Band Parametric Equalizer/Crossover.
MacGyver, what exactly are you looking for as the end result? Are you trying to shape your bass curve finer than you can with your current head unit? There may be bass-only EQs that can do that with or without DSPs. PCI, before they went to crap, used to make a great one under their Q-Bass brand.
I have the Eclipse CD 8053. I must confess though that I've never used the 25 band parametric EQ. The normal EQ is very good. So far, I haven't found the drive to step up to the exceptional "Pro" EQ and figure it all out. I don't run balanced lines either. Maybe I'm a bad audiophile
Thanks for the product ideas guys, but I'm finding that many of them are way too pricey. Doesn't make much sense to buy a $500 EQ to fine-tune a $70 sub.
I think I'll look for a used 30-band 1/3 octave EQ, that will give me at least 5 bands in the bass region, and being 1/3 octave they'll be narrow enough to do some good.
Mac - I've built simple EQ's before but I just don't have the time right now. If I'm going to do more design work it will be for modify projects (so I can afford to buy a pre-made EQ!)
